Hammertoe surgery

I had hammertoe surgery on JAN 21 . The pins were removed on February 19 . I am having more difficulty walking & in more pain after the pin removal than the 2nd day after surgery. Toes are very swollen & hurt if they are moved at all. Anyone else having the same?

I had hammertoe surgery on Nov 2nd and am only within the last 2 weeks able to walk. However, I also had my bug toe fused which is making it difficult to put a runner or boot on. My big toe wont bend sliding it into a shoe.
Expect at least another 2 months before your foot starts to return to normal. What kind of pain have you been experiencing ?
After I had my pins out I had a lot of pain pain for 3 or 4 days. But the pain subsides after awhile and yet still have bursts of pain for 2 or 2 and a half months. (Depending on your pain tolerance and how fast you heal).
When I had my stitches out I was in a lot of pain for 2 weeks. That was horrible pain!

Thanks for the reply Karen. YIKES that long before walking ! Did you use the surgery walker boot till then or crutches? Glad to hear things are going better for you. The pain is a throbbing / burning feeling. I was able to walk easier when the pins were in. I would say the pain is worse than the 2nd day after surgery. I guess patience is what I need now...thanks for letting me know.

Oh I feel your pain because it wasnt very long ago for me. That pain your feeling is excruciating! But, i promise it wont be long until it getting less and less intense. I was at the point i was so sick of people saying your still healing, take it day by day cuz it will get better.. ..I was so tired of this because the pain was horrible.
I wore the surgery boot and used a walker/ cane outside I the snow and ice until the 1st week of January. So, fir two months.
I pray you get relief soon. But, getting the stitches and pins out is the worst pain you'll have. It will get better!!!

How long before you were able to wear shoe / sandals ? My pain is a throbbing / burning sensation. If I step down & happen to move my toes ( 2nd) one especially , I get a tearing feeling. I go back to work in 3 weeks...so hoping to be able to walk properly & wear shoes.

The sensations your feeling should ho I would think, based on my experience, by
the middle of or end of April. But, everyone is different.
My feelings of tingling and numbness lasted until mud January my surgery was Nov 2nd.
As far as wearing a sandle, I was in one the 1st week of January.
Shoes on the other hand took longer. I have only been in a shoe since the beginning of March. And it doesnt feel all that wonderful. My fused big toe aches whole in a shoe.
When I took it off an hour and a half later it continued to throb and ache for 10-15 minutes.
I'm worried you might be going back to work too soon? What is your surgeon saying? It will come! There was a long period if time I was hopeless nut things are better much better.
I hope this helps you some.
All the very best to you while you heal.

hi i had bunion surgery and hammertoe surgery at the same time , i wore a wedged surgical shoe for 7 weeks , once the pin came out it was fine to be honest i never really experienced much pain it was more for me about getting used to walking again without the wedged surgical shoe Then , 3 month after i had the same surgery on the other foot but the day before i was due to have the pin removed i was in bed and the quilt must if caught it and i woke up and the pin had been ripped out my toe and was just lying there,
i think i have high pain tolerance though
i also had Bilateral Mortons Neuroma surgery a few month after to
Hopefully your pain will start to ease of a little more each day and you can get back to normal and be pain free

WOW... Sounds like you have has great results with your surgeries . Did you need to have that pin put back ? Were you able to wear shoes after that 7 weeks ? Since my pin removal , if my foot is not elevated , (walking too much ) it starts to throb..& forget trying to move my toes. So I have been back to icing every 2 hours & keeping it elevated as much as possible. No choice but to be patient ! I am due back at work in 3 weeks, so am counting on being able to walk properly & wear shoes.
THXS for the reply

HI JO no luckily i was due the next day to have the pin out anyway , NO after pin was out and no longer wearing surgical shoe it took a while before i could put normal shes on ( FLIP FLOPS lol , keeping the foot elevated is the key it relieves and gives less swelling then u get quicker healing process, do not try to walk to much at once even though you think you can manage it, otherwise you will suffer later in the day or the next day ( small but frequent walking about then elevate foot in between when resting , just be patient and it will get easier xx
