Hand Osteoarthritis and Weight Training

I have a few joints in my hands that are in bad shape. I've been told to stop doing exercises that require grabbing with my hands. Would weight lifting straps allow me to grab bars and dumbbells without aggravating my hand osteoarthritis?

(NSAIDs give me diarrhea.)

Thanks!

In a word - no. I too have OA in my hands, mostly my thumb joints but also to a lesser degree my wrists and finger tips (distal interphalangeal joint (DIP)), I had to stop weight training, it is severely damaging to joints affected by OA as without cartilage there is nothing to cushion or protect the joint - if you dont want to incur further damage, and thus increased pain, lifting weights is not a sensible option for an arthritis sufferer - find an alternative (eg swimming or yoga).

uuufffff really??? I don't like the idea of stopping what we want to do because of our conditions . i keep mentioning it but would try some ultrasound on those finger joints. It will make the inflammation go away, strengthen the joint, reduce the pain and let you do what you want. Hate being restricted by arthritis and thats why we are here on this forum. KEEP ON LIVING! Anyway, i use Sonic Relief for my ultrasound; check it out. i use it on my neck (super painful and rstrictive without my ultrasound treatments) and I dont take well to meds either . Best to you.

If it's any consolation you shouldn't take nsaids with osteoarthritis anyway - they interfere with cartilage regeneration. I've had a diagnosis of OA for over thirty years and do not take any pain medication for it. I have, however, for many years taken 1000 mg glucosamine (capsule, not tablet, with food) twice a day.

Can't answer the exercise question but it seems like you should not do exercise while the joints are inflamed. Maybe once the current flare up is over you could try again, with some caution. You only go this way once, best look after yourself!
