As you've discovered PMR pain does not respond to pain medication. If it did respond then in all likelihood it isn't PMR pain that you are suffering from. And since the pain from PMR is due to inflammation in the body we need to take something to help reduce that inflammation and pain pills are not going to do that. I have a lot of problems with my hands and arms up to my elbows when my prednisone is too low. That's where I feel it first. And that's what I think your problem might be. Have you tried bumping up your Prednisone to the last dose you were on that was trading your pain? You might give that a try and see if that doesn't help your pain.

Thanks for the reply.I cannot take steroids and am therefore on methotrexate 17.5mg/week injections.Hence the need for alternatives.

Do your hands need to be kept warmer?  Or perhaps cooler?  Different people react differently to changes in temperature.  I usually find warmth helps me, as in a hot water bottle, but some seem to find coldness helps them.
