Happy day

I was so pleased today that I nearly had a little cry! Previous to hip problems I was fully involved with a choreographed dance group who perform at carnivals and festivals in the UK and in Europe. Last year I had to admit defeat as I couldn't manage the jumps, twists and turns. I really missed my dancing. But this evening, at nearly 9 weeks post THR, I went along to the weekly practice and found I could easily participate if I was careful. I won't be performing this year but oh boy, it did my heart and soul so much good to be able to participate once more!

So all you newbies, hang in there, do your walks and exercises and life will get better. ??

Wow, well done Steph, it does make such a difference and things will get even better when you get stronger.  Also makes you feel emotionally better to be able to get back into things.

Thats great Steph I am so pleased for you.  Its good even to be back trying to do things you did before both for your physical and emotional recovery.

I had mine done in Feb and am now back cycling and back at the gym.  I am looking forward to skiing in January :-)

Well done Steph, I know exactly how you feel as I went back to my yoga class on Monday evening. I am 14 weeks post op. I was able to keep up pretty well although I cannot sit cross-legged yet.The breathing practise and the visualisation at the end was bliss and I slept like a log that night.

It's definitely good for the soul. Keep up the dancing and enjoy life!

    love Ali xx

Bravo Steph - what super news and progress. You must be halfway to the moon.

And several others posting great progress - got to say that returning to yoga still feels a little distant but perhaps that is my bad hip talking (two weeks to see my surge on to set the next date)!!!!

Well done, that is just brilliant news.  It also gives those of us in the early weeks stages something positive to hope and aim for.

    Hi Steph

Im glad you feel well enough to dance at 9 weeks post op.  I love dancing but not too energetic like jumping and twisting.  Prior to my op over              5 months ago, I used to line dance, sequence dance and energised dance for the over 50's. It got too painful and I had to stop dancing.  I still go to see my friends dance and a couple of times I tried a line dance and felt good.  Because I am still having problems with my foot and can't seem to get anything sorted with it, it's making it difficult to do the dance steps because my foot isn't flexible I feel so clumsy.

Good luck with your dancing, I bet you feel great.

Nice answer ... I used to do Scottish dance until my hips made it impossible to do the side step. Soon ... one more hip to go!

I line danced for a few years and then quit partly because I got too busy but partly because it started hurting my hip.  It is something I would really like to get back to and hope I can!

      Hi Leslie

How is your hip now? Mine is a lot better after the op. I managed a couple of line dances when I went to a session but it is the problem with my foot that's preventing me now.  I hope you get back into it soon.  I found it very relaxing and enjoy the music I can't wait to get back into my dancing.

Hi Brenda -- it's still early days for me.  Surgery was two weeks ago today -- June 17.   Yes, I just loved line dancing.  I'm single and it's a great way to dance to music without needing a partner.  Plus all the teachers I had played great music.  It did get to be quite a memory load!  Tons of songs and tons of steps.  I was probably an upper-intermediate level when I stopped a couple years ago.  I'll start back in at the beginning level and see how I do.

Probably will wait until the 3-month time to try it.      I'm very pleased with my hip right now.  Have very little pain.  Walk up and down my hallway wth ease (and with a walker......).  So nice to have that arthritic pain gone for sure.  ARe your foot problems something that can be fixed?  Surgery needed?  Hope it can get better so you can get back to dancing, for sure.

Hi Leslie it's 51/2 months since my surgery and my foot problem isn't improving.  It started before the op and has gradually got worse.  After the op I complained to the nurses but they said it will improve.  When I got home I went to the doctors he told me it was too soon to tell.  When I went for my 7 week check the doctor told me it was plantar fasciitis.  I've had that before and this is worse.  I've been to a private physiotherapist who told me he thought it was a nerve problem from my back and would write to the doctor.  My last visit was to a chiropractor and he thought it was because of an old injury and needed correcting.  So I am still waiting for answers.

on a lighter note I'm going to Ireland today with my sister for a week.  I'm married but my husband doesn't like going away,  I've been married 50 years in October.

I hope I can get back into the dancing soon and I wish you luck with your improvement and dancing.

Hi Brenda.  I hope you can get the foot pain sorted out.  Let us know when you get some answers.  I've had foot pain before and it just makes your whole body hurt!  Not fun.

Congratulations on a 50-year marriage.  That is great.  And fun that you can travel with your sister.    I travel some with my younger sister.  My older sister died a few years ago (pancreatic cancer -- just the worst cancer ever, I think), and the 3 of us had traveled together some.  So after she died, my younger sister and I decided we would travel together each year.  Even if it's just a short trip nearby.  We have done that and it's been great.  She's an accountant and we travel after the tax period is over so she's able to really relax.

Good luck with your recovery and foot stuff and hope you get back to dancing too.

Hi Leslie sorry to hear about your elder sister. My mum died of Brest cancer. It was about 40 years ago but she was only 57. The memory of them never dies and knowing what they went through.

Have you got any holidays booked with your other sister? My sister and I have just got back from Ireland. It was goo holiday but tiring. Because I'm still having problems with my foot, I feel a burden on her. I can't walk far and have to keep stopping. I've paid to see a physiotherapist a Chiropractor and been to the podiatry clinic. They gave me an insole which I have been told isn't any good. I have bought 3 pair of new shoes with built in insoles which I can't get on. The doctor is now refering me to an orthopaedic surgeon.

Sorry to keep ranting on but that is how I feel. Hope you feel well and keep dancing

Hi Brenda - very sorry to hear that nothing has been resolved regarding your foot. I hope this changes for the good soon. Thanks for asking about my situation -vastly buoyed yesterday!

I saw my surgeon yesterday and have a Sept 20 date for my second hip. I sincerely hope that dancing (incl the side step) I'll be feasible by the next Robbie Burns. Right now that seems a goodly ways off. But as I said to my surgeon, let's get on with it (the second hip) so I can can start living life more fully again . Surely this is the slogan that I hear implicit in almost every discussion here?

Hugs to you Brenda. I hope to 'hear' more optimism in your messages soon - and a sense that you can start envisioning the good life again. Xox
