Has any kind of alternative/natural medicines helped any of you?

Posted , 11 users are following.

My therapist said the Ativan (small .5 dose once per night) is not addressing my depression... That it is primarily good for anxiety... and that my 'problems' are really coming more from Depression than Anxiety...  I do not like ANY kind of Rx's... have been put on several and quit after so long because they simply were not working...

I am not meaning to come across that people should NOT take Rx's... I know its whatever works best for you and I respect that.

I know that getting down to the nitty-gritty of what is really causing the problems will, at times, make things temporarily worse...which has to happen before it can get better... But am wondering if any of you found some natural medicines that help you.

Thanks for your responses...

I don't know of any natural remedies. I tried sam-E with no luck. Of course diet is important. I have been on several different antidepressants for over two years and none have helped me out of this depression and anxiety. It's been horrible

Probably best to stick with foods, for instance I read cantaloupe was good for depression. But you still would have to worry about allergies and side effects and the fact hardly anybody is doing research on foods or herbs.

    Hi Betty

I've been suffering from anxiety and depression for the last few months, caused by a very stressful situation.

Before it happened I exercised regurlary, both cardio and weights. I have never had depression before this, and the exercise must have helped.

Today I went for a long cycle ride, and my mood lifted massivley. I'm intending to take up weights again soon too.

I tried different types of medication, but they just made me tired and put me into a mental fog, I've tapered off them now and feel more positive (I know they work for some people though).

Exercise increases natural endorphins, tires you out so you sleep better, and makes you feel better about yourself and your body. Just going for a walk is a good start.

    Best of luck!

St Johns Wort is helpful to some and I like a fizzy calcium mag fizzy drink called Calm. Taken at bedtime it helps with sleep and melatonin does too. Keep trying different things and something will help. Hugs.

Hi Betty..I am also searching for natural aids...for depression and anxiety.

I had a really bad reaction to prescribed medication this weekend.

So, I am doing research and learning however that we have to be very careful with the herbs we take and compare them to the medication we currently take...to make sure there are no interactions.

I read that Ginseng is really good for depression and anxiety and safer (as far as interactions than St. Johns Wort).  I also have been taking Melatonin with my .5 Ativan for sleep and it works really well.

Magnesium is also good for Anxiety, I just don't know how much and if you can take too much.

I think if I am going to take the Ginseng I will take it every other day vs. everyday.

    Same with the Magnesium.

I also read that FISH oil (Omega 3) has very good results for many things...heart, and stress and anxiety....So I took one of those today.

    A Vitamin B complex...but not too much.

    Hope that helps.
