Has anybody have experience with hemorrhoidectomy + colonoscopy done in one procedure?

Hi all,

I am scheduled to have hemorrhoidectomy + colonoscopy in 4 weeks. My surgeon also suggested to get bilateral pudendal nerve injection to provide somewhat extended pain relief post op. Has anyone had the same? How many hours post op did it last? I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks again!

    Hello

okay first off why are you having both procedures right after each other ? Typically that doesnt occur! I have had both but months apart.

Colonoscopy make sure you off work during prep and the day of the colonoscopy it's very uncomfortable feeling afterwards and most likely you wont remember anything.

    Now ..

Hemroidctomy I wouldn't recommend the spine injection it seems to have a lot of hit or misses for that. Local anesthetic works fine all the same.

When I woke up and for almost 2 days I was numb down their couldnt feel much. My surgury was suppose to be 45 minutes I was in their just over an hour. For Post OP, your with your Nurse until you wake up after Surgury checking blood pressure and providing medication is given until your fully awake and then your taken to Post OP. They want you to eat a cookie and drink something, I was absolutely out of it and had taken me a good hour to realize what was going on. But my husband was there after came into Post OP, nurses brought him and my Surgeon also came to discuss the surgury and what recovery was going to be like, with paper work and medications to go home with.

They wont let you leave unless you have a ride and they call up to Post OP so make sure you have someone there to listen to the doctors afterwards and pick you up.

Hemorrhoid surgury is different for everyone but you'll be off for at least 1 month first 2 weeks are the worst. Take loads of sitz baths ( 3-4 a day ) use the medication when needed, dont be a hero.

Dont sit on your bum, and walk after week 1.

    Good Luck!!

Post OP: depending on your outcome after surgury as some people stay longer because of other issues. Typically 2 - 3 hours if you have a normal outcome

      Hi Meaghan,

Many thanks for your reply and advice. My surgeon recommended the colonoscopy to make sure everything else up the bowel is also in order. He suggested he could do the hemmorhoidectomy in the same time since I will be asleep anyway. It made sense to me during the appointment. In theory, the empty bowel should also give me a few days of healing post op before the first bm. However, now after discovering this site and reading all the posts I have not come across many people having this ‘combo’ done. The pudendal nerve block supposed to aid in recovery and also prevent some of post op complications (eg. urinary incontinence). Again, I have not seen this discussed in any of the forums and would like to hear people’s experience.

      Many thanks again.

colonoscopy and hemroidctomy procedure are 2 different anesthetic ( local )

wouldn't recommend doing both and a G.i doctor does a colonoscopy and a general surgeon does the hemroidctomy I would be nervous for the same doctor to do it.

Do you live in the states or canada?

I find doctors in the states do the spine tap more then in Canada. best of luck

I am in Australia. The doctor doing both is a specialist Colorectal surgeon with extensive experience so in theory I should be in good hands. He has also requested the anaesthetist to see me about a week before the op to discuss the anaesthetic and pain relief. I am quite concerned with the recovery and the pain intensity that most people describe. I have never had any type of surgery so really have no reference point in terms what to expect.

when I just had a colonoscopy done I had pain in my lower adominal for a few days

when having the actual surgury its painful first time I ever had surgury myself .

I had several complications during my first 3 weeks recovery likening was unable to have my first BM so I had to go to Emergancy Department I got a slight infection.

all you need to remember is dont read more into it then necessary it's different for everyone this website helped me alot during my surgury and ask questions while your recovering but alot of other people had a great recovery time others not so much. But I am 6 weeks post OP and I couldnt be happier not to feel my hemroids anymore and be in pain like that.
