Has anybody successfully “medically retired” due to ME/CFS and been able to draw a work based pensio

I was wondering if anybody has successfully been able to convince their employer and pension company, that they are no longer fit to work and have been able to start to draw a pension from his or her pension fund. Plus be under the national retirement age of 65+. I know redundancy allows you to gain pension payments after the age of 55.

It would be nice to know if people have, as its then an option for others to consider if they are in work and struggling to cope.

My neurologist at the hospital has told me that ME is an untreatable and incurable disease but sadly he didn’t put it in writing otherwise I could have passed it on to the pension company as evidence.

Your experience and views on this are most welcome…  smile

Hi yes, I got it last year from the NHS. Been working there for about 9 years and told them at interview that I had ME. Sickness record always a bit worse than others until the last 2 years when symptoms returned quite badly and struggled on. Had very supportive managers who did everything right e.g. sickness interviews and accommodating my condition by letting me work from home, or a base nearer my home, referring me to OH Dr, reducing my hours to be made up gradually when well again. One HR manager told me to use my holidays as sickness!!!! But I didn't. Eventually when I had reached the end of the process was picked up again by OH who suggested I might get ill-health retirement pension (I'm 58). He assessed me, got a report from my GP which was supportive, I had to fill in a long form as did HR. OH Dr acknowledged that all accommodating arrangements had been put in place and I had had CBT and GET in the past. (Not officially, I had read many books on CBT and used the techniques and the trainer in the work gym had set up a short graded exercise programme for me) the OH Dr accepted that and recommended me for ill-health retirement and I got that last July. Sorry the reply was so long and good luck with your application.

Hi, further to my earlier post work have decided to stop discipline procedures against me and have started the process for ill health retirement. It is not guaranteed and can take up to 12 months to sort but it's a move in the right direction! My GP and the OH GP are supportive of it so watch this space......
