Has anyone been fitted with a mini hip?

I have been offered a mini hip by my surgeon, and I am very tempted to have it but understand it's in an experimental stage at the moment.

It is just a ball and a shortish pin. It saves losing to much bone which appeals to me.

    Hi Veronica

This interests me,the idea of losing less bone appeals.I have osteoporosis and worry about crumbly bones being operated on.

Could you please tell me which hospital and the name of your surgeon.

I wonder whether it might be close to me.

Good luck whatever you decide,am interested in following your progress.

The surgeon is call Sarah Allwood-Muirhead.

I don't think that she can do it if you have osteoporosis, your bones have to be very healthy to hold in the short stem pin. Also you cannot put wait on your leg for 4 weeks after the operation.

I haven't fully decided yet, as I have seen another couple of surgeons who have tried to put me against it as it's apparently in experimental stage. I'm very tempted but still researching.

      Hi Veronica....

its funny you you shoulf talk about 'experimental' procedures. When I was in with my surgeon I talked about 'new' procedures that seem to be coming into     play more & more & he said "well it's kinda like my iPhone, I have the iPhone 5 & when the iPhone 6 cones out everyone wants it, but I'll wait for the bugs etc to be ironed out first!" I get where he's coming from but without surgeons doing new stuff, we would never move on would we? cheesygrin

Yes Martin I understand, I wish I could wait a year or two more to find out if anyone has had a successful mini hip replacement! I'm going to research more, let me know if you here anymore.

I am replying to you since 3.5 weeks ago I have had my right hip replaced by Sarah Muirhead-Allwood  at King Edward VII in London. I had a conventional hip replaced on the left some 2 years ago with an incision of ca 10 inches and as a result decided that I would spend my life-time savings on finding the best surgeon and treatment as befits a man of 78. I have returned home on Tuesday from a recuperation home specialising in hip and knee replacements, all the hip being Sarah's patients. The consensus is that she is the finest hip revision surgeon in the country and features in the Daily Mail top 10 hip surgeons. Her record is incomparable and she has lead in new technology. She succeeded in removing and replacing my hip through a 5 Inch incision and it seems to have survived a fall out of bed last night leaving a tangled mess of arms, legs, table lamp, water etc on the floor. I am planning to walk down to the pub, half a mile and back lunchtime, but I will not attempt any more at this stage.

I cannot speak more highly of the competence of this surgeon, but do not leave it too late since she probably wishes to devote more time to the golf-course.

Hi Brian.I am so pleased to have your input.I too am 78 years old.I found the info on the top 10 surgeons online. She also shows the best results on the HJR.

I have been considering a consultation with Sarah Muirhead-Allwood.As you say at my age health problems are the best use of savings. One worry I had was after care etc.and extra costs for that. Also the location where the procedure would take place. I am in Dunstable.Beds.

Could you please let me know where the recuperation home islocated.

Also if you could give me some idea of cost I would be grateful.

There seems to be a private messaging option ,maybe you could use that.It would be much appreciated.

So glad you are doing well.

      Best wishes Joy

      Hi Brian,

I hope you are well and recovering as expected.

Since exchange of private messaging I have not heard from you.

Hopefully this means you are busy making the most of your new hip and enjoying life!I would really love to know how you are doing!

As for me I have decided to put my decision regarding choice of surgeon/hospital on hold as the latest info. from the NJR is due to be released at end of September. Another month is worth waiting for the latest updates.

I am going to Cyprus tomorrow, want to make most of every day while still able to do so.

Also I find everything easier there and will concentrate on getting fit (lots of swimming) and losing weight (tend to eat more wisely in the sun). Fitness and low BMI all help with future HR.

Best wishes for your ongoing rcovery.
