Has anyone been told that wheat could play a part on Fibromyalgia?

I have been told by a therapist that cutting wheat and gluten from my diet may help the fibro symptoms. She also said to cut out lactose. Has anyone tried a wheat-free or lactose free diet?

Not yet but it is something I have thought about a lot! I am convinced especially bread has an effect on me, problem is actually getting down to trying it! I keep saying i will, but it keeps turning out to be too inconvenient, but I definitely will be trying it.I did it once before a few years ago, tried a variation of the atkins diet, no bread, pasta, rice, spuds, cereals and lots of eggs, fish and chicken, but I still had some things you werent supposed to on it, like cottage cheese and vegetables. I did the caffeine free coffee though with cream rather than milk and sweetener rather than sugar and no chocolate! That was hard but I did it for a few months. After 6 weeks i had lost 21lb and felt great so its gotta be worth a try to feel that good again!

i have, for me it made matters worse ,only you can find out by doing it your self,

i find heated milk makes me sick but i am fine with cold milk. i am ok with chesse

and butter, and white bread , brown bread constapates me .as does brown rice but that might be due to the chronic fatigue everything is hard work even digestion.

I tried a gluten/wheat free diet for three months, I was already on dairy free, there was no improvement at all but everyone is different.

That is a healthy way of eating. Also include any pre made or boxed foods. Ck ingredients. They r sneaky.

It wouldn't hurt to see if perhaps u could feel better by a diet change.

Good luck and keep me posted.cheesygrin

Hi Marie, doctors have found that many auto immune disorders are caused by celiac. Years ago when I went on a low carb diet, I could not eat bread or anything of the like. I didn't have the pain I death with before. Looking back years later, it was the gluten that I was no longer consuming. But I hadn't figured it out yet and went back to normal eating.

It took me years to figure out. It wasn't until 9 years ago that I started developing awful cramps in my abdomen every afternoon. Again I gave up gluten and the pain stopped. And again, off gluten the fibro didn't bother me for years. I have finally, in retrospect, figured out, in addition to reading recent research, that this all makes sense now. I have dealt with fibro for about 30 years now, but due to so many years now and then off gluten, I didn't have to suffer through it all. Now totally off gluten for several years now, I only have a small flare-up once in awhile from a stressor or once after surgery, but it is managed well and quickly with Lyrica.

I recommend you at least try to eliminate it, but watch those ingredients in what you eat, especially prepared foods. You may not have a tolerance to rice or oats or potato starch - all of which are used to replace (wheat) gluten.

    Best to you!

Thanks for your comments, I too have tried this a few years ago. I was told then by a different nurtritionist at a complimentary medicine/healing centre that I was gluten & lactose intolerant as well as a few other foods. I followed her suggestions for a while but found it quite hard to give up both wheat and milk. I asked my GP iabout it and he dissed the therapist, saying that it was not a scientific test and that if I wanted to check if I was celiac, I could have the blood test. This proved negative and I was left confused as to what I should do. I came off the gluten free & lactose free diet. Looking back - like yourself, I remember feeling much better as far as the digestion side of it was concerned, but didn't help the fibro, although that wasn't as bad then as is it now. I have been on the gluten & lactose free diet now for 2 weeks now, I am much less bloated but my fibro is as bad as ever. I know it's early days and was told that I have to give it 6 months before I know if it is working. I have been very strict with myself and only eat home-cooked food, I've even been baking  gluten free treats. I am a bit confused as to whether I can use margerine and butter in cooking. it was very difficult recently when I went to visit family and found the choice was very limited when eating out. I'll carry on & see if it does any good.

I went on the Fodmap diet (food exclusion, gradual reintroduction) convinced that I had a gluten allergy. Nope, Im lactose intolerant. Now feel way better since realising. Can still have yoghurt, hard cheese and butter in small quantities and lactose free milk of course. Miss cream..... mmmmm... real cream but other than that feel loads better, although the symptoms remain, the digestive problems have improved a lot smile

Gluten aggravates pain. I did't believe the dr that told me but through trial and error I realize how much worse my pain is when I eat it.
