Has anyone else suffered with a popped muscle after hip replacement.

I had total hip replacement in June last year. Great no more pain but the muscle has popped after surgery and is stopping me walking without a crutch. The consultant says I could have a repair to put the muscle back which entail wires etc but it dosent mean it will be successful. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the success rate. I am at a dilema and dont know what to do. Iam 65yrs of age and dont really want to have to use a crutch for the rest of my days. If I was to hear positive results from this i would go ahead. Can anyone assist please.

Sorry no, but at 65 I might be inclined to give it a try. If it fails would it be any worse than now?

The consultant says it should not make my problem any worse, So yes I am thinking about it. I would have liked to get some feedback from others who have had this done before I make up my mind. Cheers for your input.

What do you mean by the muscle has "popped"? You mean tearing of a muscle and tendons? Do you know which muscle and/or tendons?

The day after my op the Physio came to get me moving, As soon as I put weight on my operated hip I heard 2 loud thuds, which made me feel quite sick and dizzy and had to sit down. I asked the Physio did she hear that but she said no. The consultant has since shown me the x-ray and you can see where part of the muscle is sticking out near to the top and side of my new hip. They say that is the reason why I cant stand on that leg on its own.

Jacqui, that does not sound good. How long ago was that x-ray? If it was recent, and you are confident that the diagnosis is correct, then you have to decide if you think what they are offering is the best solution. Can you see a different doctor for another opinion? I am sure you are trying to do some research online that will help you make your decision. As Maggie said above, chances are it might help, and hopefully their repair wouldn't make it worse.

I am almost 68 and haven't been able to walk without a limp since my hip replacement last July. I, too, don't want to be using a crutch or walker for the rest of my life! We don't yet know what my problem is, but you actually have a diagnosis. I sure don't blame you for not wanting another surgery. I would do almost anything to avoid it.

Annie. I had the op last June. Went for my three month checkup and that is when they saw the mustle on the X-Ray, I then had another three months x-ray in Dec and he says things have not changed its up to me if I want to go in for the repair, they are calling me back in June so that will be a year or I can decide before that, One of my neighbours is going in for a similar repair in February so I am hanging on to see how she goes. Thanks for your advice.

Jacqui, it will be interesting to see the result of your neighbor's operation, for sure. I was sorry to read hat it happened the day after your operation when you were being encouraged to "get moving". On my second day I was standing up with a walker for a few seconds maybe, but still had a bedside commode and wasn't really taking more than a step or two, using the walker and with one or two staff hovering over me, so I didn't feel overly taxed. I wish these PT people wouldn't push us beyond our capabilities so very soon after surgery. Give our poor muscles, tendons and very hurt bones a little bit of time to get the healing moving, instead of all the hurt parts getting our bodies moving!
