Has anyone else tried using yoga for M.E.?

Hi just wondered if anyone else has tried yoga for M.E./CFS. I tried going to a remedial yoga class for a while though the class was meant to be for people with MS who have different abilities to people with M.E. I was able to do some of the stretches but not all and couldn't really keep with the rest of the class so stopped going. I wrote down the stretches that I felt really helped me and got some from books and made up my own routine to do at home. I do 5 mins breathing and joint mobility exercises, about 20 mins easy yoga stretches and 15 min yoga niddra relaxation at end. The problem is I can only do this on a good day so end up not doing it regularly. If I manage it on a good day I feel it really helps me. I feel much looser afterwards as if my joints have been oiled and amazingly feel like I have a bit more energy. I would would really like to do some yoga on a regular basis but need a shorter routine to do. Does anyone have any advice about the best stretches to do for a mini-yoga routine?

Like you I can't keep up with yoga classes but find I can take part in Tai Chi classes and can carry on at home. You can look up some moves on you tube to get some idea before finding a class perhaps?

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of trying Tai Chi. Will look into it and see if it's something I might manage to do!

An occupational therapist came to my home and taught me a simple yoga routine that I can do on my bed. When I was doing it I felt more supple and less achy. The trouble was having the motivation to keep it up!

I'm glad you reminded me because I must take it up again. I'm feeling pretty stiff and achy since not doing it. I can't really explain the routine because it'd take a while and I'm exhausted but I recommend gentle yoga.

What you're doing sounds like quite a lot for someone with ME so instead of doing it on good days why don't you get into the habit of doing it every day but a small amount. Your body will get used to it and you can do a little more when you feel up to it perhaps and as it helps you to feel a bit stronger.

That sounds like a sensible idea. Any time I have a bit more energy I probably push myself too hard then end up worse. How long did you do your yoga routine for? Maybe I could try and do a bit for 5 or 10 mins more regularly though not sure what would be the best moves to for. Although anything would be better than nothing!!!

At first it was probably around 5 minutes, just stretching my toes, rotating my ankles, and working up the body, moving legs sideways, then twisting and stretching the arms out and rotating the head.

The therapist said start with doing each stretch 5 times. After doing it for weeks I'd add more stretches and after a few months I'd added more and more of my own moves so it was a longer routine in the end and my body felt pretty good.

Thanks for motivating me to start again! razz

That sounds very like my physio routine! Won't be doing any of it today tho as I've had my massage today - ouch!

That sounds like the joint mobility exercises I do at the start of the routine which I learnt at the yoga class. Will have a go at doing these regulartly then maybe add more stretches in as I get used to it. Probably a much better idea than trying to do loads all at once then not able to do any for ages. Will try to start them in a few days. Too sore just now as ended up having to do more than normal last week and muscles haven't recovered yet. Thanks very much for the tips!

When you first started doing Tai Chi did it make your arms very sore? Noticed quite a lot of arm movements seem to be involved and don't have a lot of strength in my arms. Does it get easier through time?

They did/do ache a lot yes! And I often sit down to do some of the moves, it doesn't always work but it just reminds me to move rather than sit and do nothing which makes my muscles weaker. I'm not making much sense ha ha! Too tired!

Sitting down would be a good idea. Might give it a try - won't know unless I give it a go! Am very tired too now - mind going. Off for something to eat and rest......

I can't do any form of standing up excercise because I'm always too dizzy and brain fogged but I really think you can get just as much good from doing it sitting down.

I started taking a Homeopathic remedy for dizziness and it really works! I walked around and felt more steady, not dizzy and the brain fog was less. It also gave me a kind of light lovely feeling. I'm going to keep taking them and perhaps eventually I'll be able to do a bit of yoga standing up. razz

I get dizzy too if I've been lying for a long time then get up or on my really bad days. If I feel lightheaded I often lie down with my legs on pillows so they are higher than my head. Once read something about M.E. that was something to do with a problem with the neck and a reduced flow of blood to the brain which can cause dizziness - can't remember exactly what it said now. I think it would be safer for me trying to get back to yoga or stretches either lying or sitting at the monemt. Am going to try a bit next week as muscles have calmed down a bit now - managed to get out house to shop today!!  Hope you are having a good day!

I forgot about that; thanks for leaving the rest of my post. biggrin

I'm glad your muscles are feeing better. It seems that a lot of us overdo things; pacing's so hard to learn isn't it. When I have a bit of energy I want to use it up but it's not wise.

I know what you mean about getting out to the shop; I rarely do but when I do it's such a sense of achievement! Lol

I'm having a good day; glad you are too. I still haven't done any yoga but I will.

wow-he was not that kind to me.  what about hydro therapy?  I was offered this but I turned it down thinking trudging water would be more effort than I could stand.  has anyne tried it?

Ha ha! Perhaps "incapable of proper pacing" should be part of the diagnosis!

Yes Frank, I think usually whole posts are removed.

I've never tried hydro therapy. By trudging water what do you mean? Lol Is it me being dumb; I don't know if you mean being in it or drinking it.

Glad you're having a good day too. Am going to be really sensible next week - feel a bit better so am going to try and NOT push myself like I usually do when I get a bit energy. Bought healthy food today so am planning healthy eating, resting, pacing week and if I feel up to it am going to try mini yoga stretches and/or short walks. Feel like craving vitamins as didn't eat well last week - too tired to cook much. Bought loads of fruit and veg today. Noticed if I eat better I have a bit more energy but you need the energy to make it in the first place!! I sometimes make a smoothie with live yoghurt, honey, strawberries and blueberries and it seems to give me boost. Seem to feel better when I eat sweet potatoes too. Have you noticed you feel any better after eating certain foods?

I've been eating healthily for years and I cut so many things out when I got ill. I know it's helping, along with herbs because some of my symptoms have improved. I gave up wheat and gluten last year and I don't get bloated any more! razz

I hope you have a great week and enjoy your healthy eating.
