Hi , i started with psoriasis 8 years ago and then joint pain 6 years ago. Last november i was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and put on methotrexate. After just a few weeks i felt amazing and my skin was clear. But lately the symtoms of both are back especially my joint pain and swelling are back with a vengence . The last few days the backs of my thighs are so painful and walking is a hard task. The rhumatology nurse upped my methotrexate to 20mg a week and im hoping it helps . I have four young children im 35 but feel 70! Has anyone expeienced leg pain?

    Hi Andrea

Do you think its the Methotrexate that is causing the problem ? I have just started using it although I am only on 7.5mg. But i am concerned about the side effects that these drugs have. I am about to have my second dose of it tomorrow as I only take it once a week so I have not noticed any improvement in my condition so far but i have noticed the condition getting worse but I need to allow time for it to start to work. I will be watching this discussion to see what others have to say about this drug. Wishing you all the best Rob

Hi robert i dont think its the methotrexate, that has honestly been fantastic for me with no side effects . Im having a huge flare up thats why the dose has been increased but ive never had pain in my thighs before. Sorry to hear you havent seen any improvement yet i hope it works soon for you. Within 4 weeks of starting methotrexate last year i felt like a new person. It was worth risking the side effects for me .

      Hi Andrea

Thanks for the reply. I am hopeful that it will start to work shortly i know it is too soon to see any results. I decided to start this treatment because of my condition getting worse, Although i dont think it will undo the damage that the condition has already caused. I am unable to grip properly with my right hand due to having sausage finger i am unable to close the first three fingers so i an trying to learn to cope with it at the moment, although i will be asking if there is anything they can do even if they can operate to improve it. I am/was a biker which i find hard now as i have trouble gripping the throttle and operating the front brake, i still have a bike but i cant use it atm which is very frustrating my aim is to be able to ride again so fingers crossed on that.

i was diagnosed with Psoratic Atrthritis January 2014 but i had been complaining for 2 years before to the doctor about different things which if linked together would of pointed to Atrhritis but they never joined the dots together. The first time i notice what i now know as  sausage finger was about a year ago which was my middle finger on my right hand but i have now got it in 3 fingers which has developed in the last month. It is fairly painful as the finger and joint swells which stops it bending hence loss of grip. I have also noticed 2 days ago that the top joint of my index finger on my left hand has started to swell as well. Sausage finger is normally the bottom joint between the knuckle and first joint. im not sure what can be done but i will be discussing it with the doctor and my specialist soon as it is effecting me greatly, currently i am unable to work because of this with is driving me up the wall, needless  to say it is also effecting me physically and mentally but im still kicking which is something to be grateful about i guess and there are others suffering more than i am.

They tell you that it might be 12 weeks before you notice any improvement, Rob.

I took Methotrexate for 18 months before I had to stop taking it because of sever joint pains in my hips and thighs.  I began to notice that the pain became much worse on the day I took MTX, until it was so severe that I could no longer stand it.  A shame because it was working well on my MMP.

I was started on  Mycophenolate Mofetil [MMF] last week.

Thanks  mrsmop i was told it could be upto 3 months before it started to work, I have seen from posts on here that it has different effects on different people so i am checking the effects it has on me compared to others. I have been on sulasalazine for just over 12 months which when i first starting taking it was great but my body has got used to it hence why im now on both Sulfasalazine and methotrexate.

Hi mrs mop what part of your thighs were effected ? Was this a side effect to methotrexate?

It is difficult to say which part because it seemed to run down from my hips and I am convinced it was the MTX because it was so bad on the 2 or 3 days follwoing MTX [Methotrexate]  I no longer have the severe pain.

I did quite a lot of research into pain with MTX, with the help og Google Scholar and I did find some research from about 1998, which suggested that MTX can cause/trigger joint pain.  I'll try to find it and pm  you.

Hi robert, although using for different disease, i've also been told 2-3 months before mtx starts working. Right now i'm just happy to be tolerating it!

im happy to tollerate it as long as it improves my condition, its a waiting game to find out. Like all drugs its trial and error and worth trying if it does not work try the next thing thats on offer. My main concern is the side effects these have on other organs as we all know the side effects can be quite bad hence the need for blood tests. Time will tell i guess
