Has Anyone Gotten Diarrhea from Acid indigestion

All last week my stomach was upset and my bowels were runny. When I took some Gaviscon that seemed to help. Has anyone else had this problem?

    Hi there!

It could be your medication (if you are on it) a lot of them state diarrhea as a side effect. It could be a bug too - if it's not getting any better - I would be seeing doctor. I had a similar problem a few months ago - and it was a bug - but I did get checked out just in case. Just make sure you drink plenty of fluids!

    Hope you feel better soon.

I'm not a medical professsional....but before I was diagnosed with GERD I remember my first "attack".  Everything was happening to me all at once.  First, the burning and stabbing sensation right under my chest area.  Then the overwhelming need to regurgitate and then while "it" was coming up; the "other" was coming down and out.  I believe that when your body systems are in distress, your body takes over and does what it can to expel the "problem".  It all started at once and took 4 hours to finally calm down enough for me to take Dexilant and rest until I fell asleep.  But even when I woke up in the middle of the morning (3 AM), the heaviness in my chest area was still there.  Tell your primary doctor exactly what your symptoms are.  Do not minimize ANY detail or they just may suggest some over the counter product and send you on your way.  Let your doctor know that you want to be seen by a specialist - probably a gastroenterologist rather than a gastrologist.  You need a specialist that is familiar with the disorders of the stomach, digestive system, etc. Hope this helps...best of heath.

    Hi,

When I was on Omeprazole for a month I had runny bowels but they have changed my medication to Lansoprazole and now I have the opposition problem with being constipated now. However, mine is mainly due to medication I think as I was regular before all of this.  I am still awaiting to have tests done to confirm what is wrong with me but they think that it is GORD.

    Hope that helps!

Wow!  diarrhea and Omeprazole is rare and constipation and Lansoprazole is rare.  Did you change your diet while taking these medicines?  Are you drinking enough water?  It seems like your body is reacting opposite to the noted side effects of those medicines.  One extreme to the other...the best of luck with your health.  I hope it's resolved soon.

I used to have runny bowel movement for that would last for about a week in the later days of my gastritis. Although it has been proven GERD/Gastritis does cause bright yellow, soft stools due to fast digestion, almost liquid bowel movements is mainly due to the medicine. Upset stomach is a major effect of acid indigestion/gastritis, so that's pretty normal. Usually because of something you ate.

I still sometimes get runny bowel movements when I eat something that I'm not supposed to.

What's so bad about that is that there are so many foods that a person with GERD can not eat!

I know, right? That's exactly why you can't recover faster from these horrible conditions... Like, eating is our primal function and it's just really sad you won't be able to do that with ease. You sometimes end up eating something irritating and boy oh boy does it remind you of oblivion.

Thank you all for your response to this inquiry. my bowels were runny for about 5 days last week but has since returned to normal. I would like to switch to Prevacid. My doctor has prescribed omeprazole but it doesn't seem to help. I didn't know that acid indigestion or reflux could cause diarrhea or runny stools. This is good to know.

Yes I had a doctor appointment today and had them switch to prevacid. I hope it helps too. Incidently, my runny bowels were due to an infection that I had. They gave me antibiotics for that to clear it up.
