Has anyone had bladder stones removed?

Due to BPH and acute urinary retention, I have bladder stones. Been checking into having PAE done to reduce the size of my prostate, but the radiologist says that I must have the stones removed before the PAE. My new urologist told me that because my prostate is so large (no urologist has told me how big it is, and I've seen 5 of them.) the blood vessels may be weakened, causing bleeding during the bladder stone removal. He said that if there is too much bleeding, he will have to do a partial TURP. Has anyone on this forum with BPH had bladder stones removed? Have you had a partial TURP? What was your experience?

Yes, I had a bladder stone removed. The urologist did a Cystoscopy (looked with a camera) and Lithopalaxy to remove bladder calcification.  I had this done because I was next to a have Robit-Assisted Prostectomy, and the robot arm cannot do this procedure.

I had a mildly enlarged prostate based on digital rectal examination and MRI.

Hi, I had around 90 little (2mmx2mm) cuboid stones removed as part of my BPH related HOLep procedure last July. After peeing out a few (11) final stones just post operation, I have had no problems with bleeding or anything of the other symptoms I was suffering from before.

Just prior to the op, my PSA was 25 and had been creeping up for the last 15 years. Nobody had thought to check for bladder stones, just the normal PSA tests and 3 prostate biopsies! The final thing that tipped me over the edge into having an op was an inscreasing frequency of spasms.

Since last July I have had no syptoms of any sort, sleep all night, can drink anything at anytime and no longer need to know where the next toilet is, and my PSA is 0.45. Very glad I took the route I did.

That's why I recommend a MRI. Okay, it costs. But what value do you put on peace of mind?

With so many stones did you relly did the Holep procedure Or was is just all the stone in the bladder.  That could have raised your psa and stopped you from peeing good.  Ken

      Who Knows!

According to the Urologist my prostate was enlarged which stopped the complete voiding of urine, and stopped any stones from voiding.

Thank you for the quick reply.  Never had bladder stones.  Kidney stones yes.  I had a Urolift done a year ago.  Me I would never have had the holep done I would have the stones removed and see how it would be.  If the doctor would not do it I fined one that would.  I do not like the side effects. like retro.  At 60 I still want it all. We all pic the procedure that we can deal with.  Take care and good health..Ken

      Hi Roger

When the urologist came to do the HOLep operation he found a "shingle beach" of small stones in the bladder. I know, because he left eleven of them for me to pee out normally (not pleasant through a very sore urethra). No MRI was offered (nor considered) as the BPH had already been confirmed.

Hello.  Tell your urologist that you only want the stones removed.  He has to do what you ask.  Your problem may get better.  Why have something done if you don't need it..  The side effects will be the same don't let him core out your prostate.  You will get retro and alto of bleeding that is the procedure they did 10 years ago. Just tell him no get the stone out  for now If he won't get a doctor that will.  If that does not work for your retention they have the PAE.  Take care and good luck  Ken

Ahhh, the urethra, my last virginal orafice.  Had bladder stones out twice...second time I got pitched TURP and declined. Later was pitched Urolift and had it done - though assured insurance would cover it, insurance declined it.  I can't pay the $18K so apparently Urolift has special attorneys who's job it is to appeal.  We'll see.  Don't see what the problem with some blood is.  Donate blood all the time and no way did I lose more than a little bit with the bladder stone surgery - hell, with the bladder stones up there was bleeding anyway.  Does take a few days for the bleeding to stop but its a hell of an insult to the body.  Expected and probably good to help heal.  I'm 8 months into the Urolift now and last week got seven straight days of over 4 hours sleep a night without having to get up to pee.  Still up 1,2,3 times a night but much better quality of sleep and feel rested.  My doc says the Urolift will prevent future bladder stones....we'll see.

Hello saw your post.  I had the urolift done a year ago.  Was great for me.       Had a few days of blood in the urine.    After the catheter was removed the third day burned a pit but was good to go on the fifth day.  Glad I had it done.  What type of insurance do you have.  I have Wellcare and it was covered.  It was appoved by the FDA in 2013.  Happy healing  Ken
