Has anyone had calcification after a aTHR?

HI Everyone!

I really need your help! I had a ThR last July and since February if this year i have had nothing but problems. My surgeon did exploratory surgery and found that i had some calcification in my tissue and the fascia hadnt healed. So he said he fixed itthis was in MAY of this year2018. But i was still having some problems. In July this yeat i took a couple of falls and my hip has just kept getting worse.

I seen my surgeon again and he took some xrays and did an exam HE told me that i had calcification in my hip and my hip looked as well as could be expected. Its called HO some kind of Ossification! IS anyone out there familiar with this? MY Dr. is making me take Indomathacin its similar to Ibuprofen . and i have to be careful with Ibuprofen.

I just dont know what to expect. Isee him again in a month for my knee but gees my hips got to gets straightened out first!!!!

IM really worried about this

Hi Lori, i had my surgery a year ago and I suffered with ossification. My hip had a bulge the size of a large softball, so bad that I couldn't wear my clothes. They told me that there was nothing they could do. Well two months ago it just disappeared and hasn't returned. I still use a cane for fear of falling, still can't bend over. Hopefully the same thing will happen to you. Good luck!!!

added on. DO YOU HAVE PAIN with your hip yet?

I am so sorry to hear about your problem. The only thing I had was a bone spur on my hip which the doctor observed during surgery. The very next morning I was sent for radiation to the area. The doctor said if this wasn't done, I would have problems in the future and I have had no problems. This was only one treatment.

    Hello Lori,

I haven't heard of calcification. I would get second opinion and yes I agree your hip needs to be figured out before your knee so sorry your going through this. please let us know hope your doing.

Heterotopic ossification can be caused by a fall and is normally treated with an NSAID such as Ibuprofen or indomethacin, also icing can help. Has your doctor suggested physiotherapy? Calcification can happen all over the body such as kidney stones for example. Have you had a blood test to check your calcium level?

      hi ptolemy

getting one done monday but i think it was just checked earlier this month.

Do you know what can be done to get rid of it or stop it from progressing?

      it gets really painful!

I think it is just something that happens naturally in the body. I discovered that I have a calcified fibroid after a CT scan I had. Bisphosphonates were thought to be of value after hip surgery but there has been no convincing evidence of benefit. Personally I would not take them unless someone gave me a very good reason anyway. It really seems that pain killers and light exercising with physiotherapy are the main ways to help. Do you think it Is just calcification or something else as well?

      hi ptolemy

thats 1 of the questions im going to ask my dr next month. he is doing blood work and checking for infection to. ive been battling this fir almost a year now all i know is im not having anything else replaced until this hip gets fixed and they can reassure me that thus same thing wont happen again. ive found on the internet that there are some precautionary measures they can take to keep this from happening

    Hi Lori

I got calficaltion after I had the exploratory surgery to clean out my right hip and they shoot your hip up with cortisone and after 6 months I fell at home and had a xray done and sure enough my right hip was full of callfaltion my Dr told me they don't know really what causes it But I did some research on the internet and found out it can be caused by getting cortisone injections so I ended up having to have my right hip replaced and that didn't go so well My hip dislocated 3 times within a month of each other and I had to have my hip revised all in the same year do to the cup that was put in the first time was to small and they new surgeon said it would just keep dislocating so he had to put in a bigger cup

      hi sherry

i really feel for you sherry. i end up with so much pain in my hip to. sometimes i wonder if my fibromyalgia could be behind some of this.

some of your story sounds like mine. i had a shot in my hip before my hip replaced. i really was doing well for awhile but i started noticing it feeling different and then i hurt it making my bed 7months later. i was in terrible pain for a month then he put a shot in it and it helled some but i still had problems so he did the surgery and found some califocation and cleaned it out also he said the fascia hadnt healed well it was ok fir awhile but then i fell a couple of times and now here i am with full blown calcification.

and im still looking at the other hip and my knee having to get done. but not if this stuff is going to happen.

i see my pain dr tomorrow and im asking her to increase my pain meds alittle more. i hope youre doing better now.

My mom has had similar problems. Her surgery was in May of last year. she has a large bulge on her hip behind the surgery scar. the doctor keeps saying it's just a cyst, but it showed up after the surgery. Was the calcification found on an x-ray?

I'm so worried that it's taking her so long to heal.

      country mom

my dr took xray and all he said was my xrays looked as well as could be expected the he pushed me into taking that indo mathaacin even after i told him that my kidneys didnt like ibuprofen. he told me to take it anyway. and just seemed to write me off.

i seen my pain dr today and she didnt like me on that stuff. i have Barretts esophigus and she saud my Gi dr wouldnt like me in that med so she prescibed some topical inflammatory gel for my hip.im going to another dr for some help. For him to just write me off like that and not explain anything to me , I think he did something wrong and dont want me to know. im really sorry for your mom. Id go in with her and drill that dr and get some answers . id be upset to if i were you. that bulge shouldnt be there and youd think that dr would refer her to a surveon to get that raken care of anyway! i had one on my back and my pain dr did.

      good luck
