Has anyone heard of Rhodiola Root?

Posted , 8 users are following.

My son informed me of the above herb and said he heard that it was good for  ME/CFS it's supposed to help with fatigue and brain function. Does anyone know anything about this herb.  If so I wonder would it help with the fatigue in PMR.   All comments welcome and Thank You in advance.

Nope  but this is what I found:

    How does it work?

Rhodiola extracts might help protect cells from damage, regulate heartbeat, and have the potential for improving learning and memory. However, none of these effects have been studied in humans.

I am sure it will be expensive and if it worked we would have heard of it by now.

Thank you lodger, yes I agree with you.  I have never heard of it and it's obscure name.  And if it was good, we would have heard about it by now.  Tnks anyway.  Pat

Pat, even if rhodiola root is found to be effective in treating fatigue, you would still have to check it out for any possible adverse interaction with Prednisolone, although I doubt that there has ever been any research done into compatibility.  As lodger has said, if it worked we would have heard about it by now.

Hi Mrs. O, thanks for your input.  I already said to my son about contraindications re: pred.  If anyone would know about this herb, someone from the forum would have heard about it or even used it.  I am passing on that one.  Thanks again.  Pat

Yes I know people who take it for anxiety and swear bY it. Not sure about interactions however, always best not to take too many at the same time and leave a few hours in between. If you write to a company that makes it, they generally have a herbalist to consult. It may be worth a try. I was thinking of trying myself. I do know it's best not to take it if you also take thyroxine.

Never mind a Herbalist, ask your Pharmacist as well.

The Pharmacist should be your first port of call when you are given a new prescription by any medic and if you want to buy any OTC stuff.

They are trained for 7 years and then do 1 year under a licensed pharmacist, they know about drugs.

Well jennissw, I don't suffer from anxiety, I don't think I have the energy for it lol.  I would not take anything until I would run it past my pharmacist due to other medications besides pred.  Tnks anyway.  Pat

Rhodiola (rose root) is a very pretty sedum plant with a yellow flower that bees love. I have not tried the roots however, although they do seem popular for all sorts of things.

Hi ptolemy, yes I did a wee bit of research myself.  It was my eldest son had txted me about it.  But I am going to pass on that one.  I don't know enough about it and am too tired at present to talk to my Pharmacist.  So will put it on the long finger for now.  Thanks again.    Pat

I meant find out all of its chemical make up and also what other ingredients Might be in any product. THEN go to the pharmacists. Reputable companies should also have a list of possible interactions.

I know now several people who take it for and and for heart palpitations.

    !!
