Has anyone here had Core Decompression? How was your experience & result?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Monday, son had an MRI which showed AVN in the right, non-THR hip. He was not expecting this, but decided to go ahead with core decompression, as that is the only choice now.

If you have had this, how was your recovery and results - both short-term and long-term?

Mahalo in advance for sharing your experiences. I appreciate it.

Aloha

Sorry to hear about this Soos. Even though I had sever AVN it wasn't diagnosed so I don't know about this procedure. I had a quick google though and there is quite a bit written about it but it becomes quite technical so I think this is one to talk to your consultant about. Forewarned is forearmed. I had THR for my AVN and have been told that it may take a year to feel the full benefit, but that the outcome prognosis is good.

I wish your son good luck and strength.

Thank you Basia. I'm sorry about your condition but that your outcome looks good. Xrays don't show the deterioration, you need an MRI. The surgeon did explain a lot, and I followed up with my own research. Still, we have questions for the doctor. And there's nothing like personal experience. Be well, Basia.

I found this info. easy to understand....

    Core Decompression

This procedure involves drilling one larger hole or several smaller holes into the femoral head to relieve pressure in the bone and create channels for new blood vessels to nourish the affected areas of the hip.

When osteonecrosis of the hip is diagnosed early, core decompression is often successful in preventing collapse of the femoral head and the development of arthritis.

Core decompression is often combined with bone grafting to help regenerate healthy bone and support cartilage at the hip joint. A bone graft is healthy bone tissue that is transplanted to an area of the body where it is needed.

Many bone graft options are available today. The standard technique is to take extra bone from one part of your body (harvest) and move (graft) it to another part of your body. This type of graft is called an autograft.

Many surgeons use bone that is harvested from a donor or cadaver. This type of graft is typically acquired through a bone bank. Like other organs, bone can be donated upon death.

There are also several synthetic bone grafts available today.

Hi Laura - thank you! I even found a video online. I don't think we'll be doing an autograft - that takes more time to recover. I do need to find out exactly what it will be, though. Synthetic? Mahalo for your research and reply!
