Has anyone lost their sense of taste and smell?

Other than the constant nausea, jittery feelings, rolling gut, anxiety, headaches, fatigue...etc ive seemed to have lost my taste and smell senses over the years! I dont know what is wrong with me...the dr just says "its hormones" what the hell does that mean? How can it take away my taste and smell? Has anyone else ever have this happen? I already feel like im dying now this too!

While I haven't lost my sense of taste and smell. I can tell you food doesn't taste as good as it used to. With smell I'm the opposite. I smell everything and it smells stronger. I love wearing perfume but not anymore, it makes me gag.

this has happened to me and usually it’s tied to problems with your sinuses like allergies etc. right now I have a massive sinus infection from chronic allergies and the whole left side of my face to head throat and neck jaw teeth on the left side are in so much pain. This is my third infection in the last year but I noticed when it gets really bad I have no smell or taste. even a lot of postnasal drip will make you lose them...

whats odd tho is i have had allergy symptoms in the past that never affected my taste. But when the perimenopause garbage started 6 years ago i still had taste & smell but my other symptoms drove me so crazy the dr talked me into taking zoloft..i took it for 2 months and lost my taste so i quit the medicine and my taste returned. Two years ago my symptoms were so unbearable that i thought i would try zoloft again and again lost my taste....so i quit the medicine but the taste loss remained! I tried to explain it to the dr but she said it wasnt the zoloft it was hormones. Its been 2 years since i took zoloft amd my taste is still gone but so bad now i cant taste a thing. And its every day im like this. This is hell!!

So true. I’ve had allergies and a deviated septum my entire life but I’ve never been so affected by allergies until my periods got irregular. I am 47. My allergy symptoms and sinus problems have completely gone off the deep end since my hormones when hay wire. The two have to be related!

Brandy , can you tell me how often you suffer from the nausea and churning stomach and do you lose your appetite with it ? I have had this on and off since the start of peri , but this recurring symptom is the one I hate most . I am suffering at the moment and have had it for a week now along with a migraine headache that only went yesterday .

Hello Jane, well my loss of appetite and occasional nausea started 6 years ago and it would only be for maybe 12 hours out of the day 4 days out of the month. But over the years it has gradually gotten so much worse! Now i have so many more symptoms on top of the nausea and gurgling stomach. The best way to put it is my stomach feels very seasick and eating does not relieve it, it makes it worse. I have completely lost my appetite all together now, I only feel like a normal person maybe 3 days out of the month and on those 3 days i can eat like any normal person...but low and behold the loss of appetite starts coming back on and then the nausea follows lasting for days at a time....all the other symptoms just trail in behind it. So i guess ive had the severe symptoms for the past 3 years now and sadly it doesnt seem to be letting up.

Ever since the beginning of January when I caught a bad flu bug I have been poorly on and off . I had just got over one bout and I got a chest infection and my period on the same day . The period lasted seven days and it took another two weeks to get over the bad cough / flu . Then I was only just recovering and got my next period early . I finished that last Sunday , but since that my stomachs been decidedly off and bad migraine all week . Im just wondering when I will feel better . Hopefully I will start recovering , although the irritation in my chest has been back as well this week although thankfully not a cough . Im just hoping that I dont get another period so soon and get a break . I did start skipping months last year , but now its back to monthly again . I am 51

Sounds like you are getting with the severe menopause while your body is trying to recover from the flu so i can imagine how badly you feel! Ive been skipping periods as well, i missed my first 3 periods in a row three years ago, then they became normal for a few years now im back to having periods every 2 months. Im so sick of this it feels like a slow death and your being tortured, but family and friends dont understand 😦 everyone just assumes its depression but i know what depression is....ive had it before and it never caused migraine headaches, taste loss, ear ringing, nausea, gut rolling, ovary aches, several skipped periods...the list goes on

Brandy are you losing weight with the loss of appetite? I get this on and off too. Have you gone to a GI specialist?

Yes ive lost alot of weight since this began. Ive lost a total of 20 lbs and now my weight stay right at 97-100 lbs. I cant seem to gain any weight! I had tests and all they could find was acid reflux.

Do you think it could be the hormones causing the weight loss?

i know its the hormones for a fact now! My blood tests have finally revealed that my estrogen & progesterone are way too low and my FSH is too high....however my LH is still in the normal range so menopause is still possibly more than a year out but it just goes to show you cant be too young to have perimenopausal symptoms....this started for me when i was 36, but back them only progesterone was low. Also with my LH being normal it means my pituitary gland is functioning normally. My thyroid was fine as well...so this sickness and weight loss is straight up female hormone related and im not just "depressed" like the drs tried to say.
