I have had a raised parathyroid hormone blood result recently also a raised calcium in the blood result. I had raised calcium levels several years ago but after a scan of my parathyroid glands which showed no growths it was put down to lack of Vitamin D and called secondary parathyroidism

I was told to increase my Vitamin D levels which I did and my calcium level dropped. I have continued on the supplementation. I have severe sleep problems, am tired and grumpy, my hypothyroidism been under control for the last 8 years. I am border line diabetic. Almost 73 years old. Any suggestions welcome

I have had severe soine issues and was going through my hospital records since I was in the hospital in August.  I found that a doctor did a PTH test and it showed high.  I contacted my family physician and he redid the calcium and PTH tests that showed high.  I went to a specialist he had me do more blood work 2 weeks later and mmy PTH keeps doubling.  Today I visited the doctor and he said he has to schedule an appointment with a surgeon.  I am so tired of being sick.  I have checked medical records and my calcium has been high for quite a few years.  I just want to know I will feel better after this procedure?

I just had the surgery to remove 2 of the pt glands 3 weeks ago. I am feeling like a new person.  I had been feeling like I was rapidly aging and despite telling my doctor about it, routine tests did not show anything unusual. Then my kidney function declined. A nephrologist said the calcium was too high and the pth should be checked. An endocrinologist did tests and found high pth and osteoporosis. Next stop: surgeon. Now the surgery is behind me. I am sleeping, not depressed, have more energy, better short term memory. I'm told that I will continue to feel improvements over the next 6 months.

Yours does sound like secondary hyperparathyroidism as your Calcium has fallen with vit D.  Mine didn't fall although it is at the top end of normal and I take no supplement. My parathyroid level is 11 so is not very high but I have been put on waiting list for surgery since two scans have shown up one adenoma on the right side. I also suffer from osteoporosis and had a vertebral crush fracture three years ago. I am 75 and worry about recovery at my age but if I don't I may suffer more fractures in the future. I don't know which way to jump - could anybody help me make this big decision ??

This not really a response to mv - apologies - but I have just joined this site, have no idea how to start a new thread and do have a question on hypercalcemia/hyperparathyroidism. I live in Canada and there is a year's waiting list for surgery.

Can anyone recommend an excellent surgeon specializing in parathyroidectemies, working out of a hospital in London? I realise I will have to pay privately, which I am sure will cost a fortune. However, I would prefer to come back to my home town rather than going to the states. I would be very grateful for any comments or info you could provide

    Many thanks.
