Posted , 210 users are following.

I had one on September 10th, 2014 and would love to compare notes with anyone else that has had one.   Thank You.  ChuckP   PS Some people just call it a "PAE" for short.

Constipation often occurs after any anesthesia (partial or full).  It isn't specifically related to PAE. Stool softners are usually effective but sometimes a more powerful laxative is needed.

I agree.  Miralax made more of a difference than Colace.  I now use psyllium husk powder on a regular basis.  I had constipation issues for 16 days.  I really got nailed.

Unlikely an anesthetic can make one constipated for 2 weeks. This is most likely a side effect of PAE as some of the microspheres go to where they are not supposed to like the small arteries of the colon causing ischemia which may lead to colon losing it's contractility and sometimes even bleed.

Constipation is so variable and can be related to medication, stress, dietary habits and prostatitis. Unlikely related to beads without ulceration or bleeding and has not been reported as a complication of pae with any consistency.

Dr. Bagla said it wasn't non-target embolization of the colon.  There was no bleeding.  Constipation is never a problem for me.  I even thought that the high dose ibuprofen that I was taking could have contributed.  Constipation was listed as a side-effect on the disclosure sheet.  Another member on this site had the same problem.  About two weeks of constipation.  I'm normally on a high fiber diet so this was completely unexpected.

I start my PAE journey next week by having the MRI and CT tests, then seeing an Urologist at the Chruchill Hospital in Oxford. If I am a suitable candidate I will hopefully have the PAE the following week. I will keep a note of my experience and post it on this web site.

Good luck.  As you may have seen from my posts it has been life changing for me.

The only thing I would warn you of, and it's trivial if you know it's coming, is that a day after the procedure as the body expells the dying cells you may get a temperature and shakes.  It only lasts a couple of hours but I wasn't expecting it.

If you have any questions just PM me.

Don't forget to start stool softeners a couple of days before the procedure. The anesthetic is significantly constipating.

Nealpros is right.  Start the stool softeners.   Colace, Miralax with ample water.  This is something that is not covered in the clinical literature.

One more thing...  I had my PAE late morning.  That evening I was up for the loo about every 15 minutes.  Amazingly I got back to sleep between each trip.  It was the evening of the day after that I had a temperature and shakes for a couple of hours.

No pain, no constipation, all good news.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the information. I will let you know how it goes. Tests next week and then they will let me know if I am suitable for the PAE.
