Hello again. Last time I wrote I was two weeks from PAE. Now I am 7 weeks away and want to share the results up to now.

My peeing flow is considerably stronger, I wake up and pee 0 to 1 times per night but that has more to do with my sleep cycle than to the urge to pee.

Yesterday I got the results from an independent source (I wanted to be sure that the results were real, and not biased by the doctors or clinic involved in the PAE procedure): my PSA is down from 4.6 to 2.2 and my prostate is reduced from 85 cc to 44cc.

I am out of prostate medicine (omniocas/tamsulosine).

This should get even better inthe next 4 months.

    This for the good results.

On the bad side is that I have had a couple of hyperactive bladder episodes, that required oral antibiotics for some days. I have had this bacteria (esccerichia coli) going around for the last 20 years).

I don't know if it is a prostate problem or a bladder living bacteria.

In conclusion: pae has definitely a very good result. The process is not as easy as it is described, but not too difficult either. Until now, the results are really worth. If not for the bacteria, that has little to do with Pae,, I could be at 100% happy with my life. But its quality has definitely improved.

Will keep you informed in some weeks

    Hi, it's Richard again

In adition to my recent comment I want to tell you all that since the first ejaculation (at two weeks post pae) came with lots of blood, I remained traumatized and decided to wait for many weeks for the next. Now that I am again in the "routine" , the amount and strength of ejaculation has increased considerably compared ti pre pae.

Another point I want to raise is that we are not informed by doctors or literature that an enlarged prostate can, and will, in time, damage the bladder in an irreversible way. The bladder wall, as

Much as I know, gets thicker and the muscles are aldo affected. Bacteria also proliferates when bladder is not emptied because of an enlarged prostate, and sometimes, like in my case, this bacteria stays forever.

We delay the solution of bph because of fear of impotence implied by traditional methods, damaging without knowing it our bladder for ever.

This should be a common knowledge so we can decide to solve the bhp earlier, even more now that a safe method as Pae is available.

    Best regards

Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum and have been suffering with BPH for about a year now. I was wondering if anyone has had a PAE procedure done at the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. They had successful trials and are now offering PAE under the supervision of Drs Nicholas Brown and Duncan Walker. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Colin

Hi Colin, i live in Brisbane but had my PAE done in Sydney May 2015. I couldnt be happier with the results. I was No 3 in Oz to have it done.

?The guy who did it was Dr Glen Schlapoff of Liverpool hospital in Sydney.

?He helped supervise the first few PAE's at the Wesley. Very successfully i believe.

?If you are worried about lack of experience you could always get it done in Sydney. I believe that doc schlapoff has done over sixty now with great results.

      Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Peter. I've been in contact with Dr. Schlapoffs office and they have been very helpful. They have told me that their Prostate Artery Embolisation’s are performed in the public health system at no out of pocket expense to the patient, you only need to pay $650 for the MRI of the prostate and a gap of $210 for the CTA as this is not covered by Medicare. The only problem is the wait time. The next appointment for a consultation is 5 weeks with the procedure done the week after.  I am currently living and working overseas and want to come back to Australia asap because my BPH has gotten so bad over the last month or so its really affecting my quality of life. I'm even scared to get on a plane for the 9-hour flight back home because there are days when I struggle to urinate. I have been talking with Wesley in Brisbane and they have been very helpful as well. PAE at Wesley Hospital is not covered under Medicare, but there is only a week wait for a consultation and operation. With no Private Health Insurance, the cost all up is $6,200. A lot more expensive I know, but at least there is very little wait time. When you get BPH bad it really stresses you out. Dr. Schlapoff is my first choice, but I don't know whether I can wait that long.

I knew of a guy who had similar circumstances to you and they got him in quickly. Did you talk to DrSchlapoff or Dr Katt or just one of the staff?

Are you able to self cath just to get you through the waiting time and the plane trip?

I've been communicating with Casey at Dr, Schlapoff's office by email only. I haven't got to the stage where I've to self-cath yet. I might have to go see my Urologist here and see if he can give my a crash course before I head home.

Has anyone here had excessive urine output or polyuria post PAE? It's been about 3 weeks since my PAE and all of a sudden since last night I'm putting out a huge volume of urine.

Tonight after 4 hours since my last void, I had like 1300 ml come out.

I do have a UTI and I started on cipro this morning, but I had this problem last night before I got on the cipro so it can't be a side effect. I also don't see UTI's linked to this problem.

I haven't had the PAE but has a turp 17 months ago. I  have had nights with very large output, about 300 to 400 ml every hour, as much as 3-1/2 liters overnight. I don't think it has to do with the prostate. It seems to me sometimes my body just needs to shed water, and the kidneys do it. Typically after one or two large output nights i'll get output of less than a liter the next night. Last night I passed 2 liters.

Thanks Bob, have you had your kidney's checked? Is all well with your creatinine?

    • Posted

Yes, bun cretinine levels are good. I've had this problem for a number of years. Presently take diuretics for afib, but the problem existed for several years before I did.  During a couple of periods I would go every 20 minutes at night for 4 or 5 hours straight. Luckily I haven't experienced that in more than a year.

Probably 2 to 3 liters total. But during the day I go normal amounts every 3 to 4 hours or so. My urologist and cardiologist and GP couldn't give me an answer, but they did say that at night, in the reclined position, the bladder and kidneys are more relaxed and in some people will produce more urine. I'm 69 and I guess I fall into that category. However, I'm not really bothered by it. I have bedside urinals in a basket by my bed that I use sitting on the edge of the bed in the dark. In two minutes I'm back to sleep even if I wake up 5 or 6 times in a night.
