Getting a lot of discomfort in the mornings in particular getting out of bed. Not able to run, only icing, stretching and nothing much seems to work. Had this problem for over 6 months and seen podiatrist, doctors and physical therapists. Does anyone know what causes this?

It could be caused by a tight calf muscle since your Achilles’ tendon goes into your calf muscle. If no one is giving you answers try seeing if you can get into an ortho surgeon to see what they say. They should be able to find a cause. In the meantime keep icing, take ibuprofen and do calf stretching exercises. Hope some of this helps you.

I had this and turns out I had calcification within the tendon. After going to Physio for months and getting ultrasound treatment, stretching etc, he referred me on to orthopaedic surgeon. The surgeon said it was tendinitis and put me in a cast for 2 weeks to see if that would help. It didn’t and he just said it would go away itself and sent me back to Physio. The Physio then said it wasn’t my Achilles and sent me to see a podiatrist. So within 2 mins of seeing him he said it was definitely my Achilles and asked doc to refer me for an ultrasound then sent request for a second orthopaedic opinion. It was the ultrasound which showed a lot of calcification within the tendon. This orthopaedic surgeon had me in for surgery within 2 weeks as they had a cancellation.

They take out all the damaged parts of the tendon then make lots of incisions in the tendon to stimulate it to heal. I had this done 3 times over the space of 3.5 years and it didn’t work. So last year I had the tendon from my big toe transferred as well as the Achilles’ tendon decompression and calf muscle released as well as surgeon said it was way too tight. Seems to have worked this time.

Sorry for the long winded reply! If you’ve gotten to this stage with no resolution though then think it’s worthwhile asking for an ultrasound of the tendon and seeing an orthopaedic surgeon. They generally say if there’s no improvement with Physio/stretching etc after 6 months then you’ll probably not improve without surgery xx
