Has anyone taken bile salts post gb op??

I had gb op last December and in March had what seemed like a really bad attack. Ended up at A&E. Had various tests and doctor there suggested there could be a stone left behind. In May had another attack. After long wait saw surgeon today and said it was most unlikely a stone was left behind. I looked this problem up myself and read that bile salts help. Would like to know if anyone has had this problem and taken bile salts. I would be grateful for any information on this as it looks like I've got to help myself on this one.

Hi Jill, you need to see your doctor and they will prescribe the correct meds for you. I do know someone who is taking them and it seems to be working but it is a slow process. Unfortunately problems with bile can happen sometime afterwards but you do need to see your doctor encase it isn't bile.
I was left with abdominal nerve entrapment following surgery which feels very similar to gallbladder attacks so you may need to be referred to a pain clinic.
Let me know how you get on. Take care x

Thanks Katherine. Good to get more information on this. I haven't had what seemed like an attack since May only bloatedness when i eat the wrong thing. (Don't think you can eat what you like). The surgeon said if it happens again to see my doctor and ask to see a gastroenterologist. Not sure about the bile salts as i think you're right to make sure what's causing the problem. Don't want to make it worse. Thanks again. Jill x

I had real problems putting on weight afterwards and my gp suggests to eat smaller amounts more often. I can pretty much eat what I like but I am still nervous about any fatty or highly spiced food so if I eat any I don't have very much at all.
Yes I would do that if I were you and see your doctor and ask for a referral just to get the ball rolling and some peace of mind for yourself.
I try not to take anything unless its needed, it maybe that your body is taking a little longer to adjust to life without a gallbladder and I've heard from others that it can take upto a year to heal properly in some people. Your body has gone through a major trauma and it takes time.
Go and see your doctor and let me know how you get on. x

You could have a stone left behind! It has happened to many people. Get yourself referred to a gastroenterologist, who will be able to interpret the tests and have others performed, if necessary. Having a stone left behind can be life threatening. It's not something you want to self-diagnose or try to treat.
Best of luck to you. Please let us know how you get on.

I'm surprised they've not suggested ERCP to remove the stone. It's non-invasive compared to surgery. Not pleasant, but they do sedate you. Of course it may be that the stone is too big to get through the instrument they use.
I would not take anything that has not been prescribed or suggested by a surgeon or medic. It could potentially make things worse. Ask your doctors before you take anything.

If you've just recently had your gallbladder removed and you are having issues you should definitely see a doctor to rule everything out but people need to realize that although some people adjust well after removal not everyone does, doctors say about 18% of people will have issues especially with bile and when you see bile in the toilet does not mean you have excess bile, very few people have an excess bile problem. The liver makes bile, it goes into the gallbladder and the gallbladder releases it when you eat to help digest food. With no gallbladder the bile is constantly dripping into the intestines so you are getting bile in your system when you don't need it, and not enough when you do need it. Not everyone will need bile supplements but for those not digesting well especially fats it helps tremendously. And I would say to those afraid of using it what do you have to lose? It's safe, very few side effects (you need to play with the dosage and you can get diarrhea if you get too much) and if it's not a bile issue it won't do anything, you will know within a few days if it works or not. My symptoms after eating were a horrible full feeling even with small meals, bloating, gas, cramps, diarrhea. I take 125 to 250 mg with food and get none of those things although I still occasionally get diarrhea. I do still need to eat smaller and lower fat and avoid real spicy foods. I may not be 100% but I have my life back. I would encourage you to do the research on internet and YouTube has a lot of videos too.

However having an attack could be totally different than needing bile salts? pain is never good and I would get it investigated.
