Has anyone torn a lateral retinaculum and had peroneal tendon snapping over the malleolus?

Have you experienced a torn lateral retinaculum on the outside of your ankle and had the peroneal tendon snap over the bony protuberance of your ankle? This is my current injury.

Did it heal on its own satisfactorily?

Has anyone had this injury repaired with surgical reconstruction of the retinaculum? What was the outcome and what was your age?

This is a weird and I think uncommon injury, especially considering I was not doing anything extreme at the time and had loaded my ankle in life, exercise, and PT to higher levels on a regular basis with no ill effects.

    Hi Michael,

I broke my fibula back in early april, and in doing so ruptured the all the lateral ligaments in my ankle, as well as all the medial ligaments in the other ankle.

I had surgery for the fracture, a plate and 8 screws to ensure stability but I have not had any surgery to repair the ligaments. They have healed on their own, but they have taken a long time.

The left ankle (non fracture, medial injury) took around 12 weeks. I wore a figure 8, stabilzer ankle brace on it for most of that time, and had physio twice a week from week 2 through 8 (ish) and then once a week from then on, but started working with an exercise physiologist to start strength training on it again.

The right ankle, I was non weight baring for 6 weeks due to the fracture, and then another two and half relearning to walk on it. I have not had to wear a brace on it, but have had ridged taping for weeks on end due to the peroneal's taking extra long to heal and strengthen resulting in my ankle rolling in. I have had to work a lot on maintaining foot control. It's now 7mths post injury and I have only been able to really start impact work (like jumping) for the past two weeks, most of this is due to the lateral ligament damage and not from the fracture which was cleared as healed by the surgeon 2 months ago.

I tore my peroneal brevis tendon, it was a longitudinal tear. I also tore the lateral retinaculum which meant that part if the tendon could break through and snap over the ankle bone.

I had already been having physio for about 8 months before this injury was diagnosed. I then had surgery. If you have got any questions then just ask, I am happy to help.
