Hi
i am a year 50 year old woman who has suffered from migraines since puberty. They went away after puberty, returned during pregnancy and then stopped. At the age of 48 they returned with a vengence, out of the blue i began suffering with 3 to 4 a week. I went to docs who prescribed propanalol which worked really well but lowered my heartrate to dangerous levels so unfortunately had to come off. Luckily the migraines dissappeared for about 10 months but then after a very stressful period they returned at the beginning of October 2019. went back to docs and went onto Pitozofen still had regular migraines with aura but they seem less intense. also tried Acupuncture. I have just suffered 3 migraines in the last 3 days so am once again researching my options and have started to read about the supplement 5HTP. It seems to be citing lots of success stories on the Net about this natural supplement and the effects it has on seratonin levels.
I think my migraines are linked to hormone levels however I suffer from anxiety and im starting to wonder if seratonin may be another key factor.
has anyone tried 5HTP?

Hello Kate, at 1 point I was prescribed Pizotofen, and for quite a while they were successful and I think I was migraine free, but then they started to return. I was prescribed some other medication, I don't remember which. More recently, my neurologist ( say last couple of years), prescribed lamotrigien which is licenced only for epilepsy, but it has proved to be effective at stopping migraines. In addition naproxen & also zolmitriptan nasal sprays as a backup for when I get a migraine. Recently I have been in hospital a couple of times because of the migraines. Having had to call the emergency services. I've since been taken off naproxen, which I think was making my migraines worse for me when I had to take them. Recently I did something very stupid, as my GP informed me that neurology said there was nothing else they could do for me. Now I've been told to take the spray only, at the slightest twinge of a migraine, which at this point seems to be working
I know I have gone a bit, but what the registrar in the hospital said was. Instead of my medication being increased as my dosage becomes less effective. It would be better for me to be switched to another backup medication as soon as it occurs. It seems at present I'm stuck, but I'm supposed to being going back to neurology asap and hopefully it will be possible for this to happen when the neurology work closer with my GP.
