Has citalopram stopped working for anyone?

Has citalopram just stopped working for anyone? If so, did it begin to work again?

I’m at a loss at what to do. I was on Celexa 40mg for 9 years and it worked wonders, however after going through surgery, the Celexa suddenly stopped working. I experienced a complete mental breakdown.

It’s now been 5 horrible months of trying to find an antidepressant that works for me, and I’ve had no luck.

I’m loosing hope of finding a medication that worked just as good as Celexa. I don’t know if I should go back and add another medication to the Celexa, or carry on and continue playing the medication roulette 🥺

P.s. I’m currently trying Paxil 40mg. I’ve been on it for close to 10 weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear! How are you doing now? Ask your doctor about adding Rexulti to your Celexa, that may help!

hi im just switching from citalopram myself as its not working well enough

i had great success with it in the past but its no longer effective for me, i imagine either: my depression has worsened so just taking citalopram is no longer effective, or otherwise perhaps my depression has simply found another 'route' which the citalopram doesnt work on, so basically taking citalopram now is a waste of time.

if you want my advice consider either switching to something else, or take something alongside the citalopram to increase the chances of your depression and anxiety being successfully treated.

    couple of ideas:

    1. try amitriptyline, which is an older TCA type med. this actually scored first place regarding efficiacy, in the large 2018 comparison study of 21 antidepressants (the 2018 study examined 21 antidepressants compared with placebo or comparators in 522 trials with almost 117,000 patients) -- note: i tried amitriptyline myself some months ago and i couldnt believe after just 2 weeks i was totally back to 'normal' feeling for the first time in years, completely 100% free from depression and anxiety. sadly though some people get tachycardia from it, and i was one of the unlucky ones, so i had to stop taking it. i went back to citalopram and lo and behold here i am again, full of depression and anxiety again!

    2. try a different med from the usual first line ssri's, if you have tried several and not found relief. that's what im currently doing now, i just got a prescription for a med called vortioxetine, and i just took my first one today. some people get really lucky with this med and it works great when the other usual ssri's have failed. i hoping im one of the lucky ones. i wont take citalopram again as it does not successfully treat my depression. and that's that.

    wishing you luck.
