    Annette,

I had retropubic prostatectomy just over a month ago (Dec 2nd). Like your husband I felt that one more day in the hospital would be wise, but the nurse, more or less, showed us the door. In hind sight, I think it was fine going home when I did.  Just be sure your husband knows that every day will be better than the one before. In a few days to a week he will be well over the hump.

One note of caution -- coughing (even the tiniest bit) will hurt like hell for a few days.  No one told me about this which I find amazing -- and disappointing.  The only thing that helps is to press a pillow, blanket, my wife's handbag in one instance into your stomach as hard as you can and pray that one or two little coughs is all that is needed.

Hope this helps.  I would be happy to share more of my exerience .....

Surely the agony can be helped with pain relief? I wish him well - sounds as if he's in good hands with you. I presume the quick hospital discharge is also about minimising hospital-acquired MRSA. A friend of mine was discharge amazingly soon after major heart surgery, but it all worked out OK. All the best.

He is home in so much pain, given paracetamol for relief. And his bag is still filled with blood.

      Annette,

Sorry to hear you husband is so miserable. It will get better, but it takes time.

I had blood in my urine bag for over a week and even after it cleared the pinkish color (i.e. blood) returned from time to time.  I had the catheter out 13 days after surgery.  At that time it had been clear for some days.

I was also told that if the color became dark red -- like catsup or tomato soup -- I should notify the doctor.  Fortunately, that did not occur.  There were, however, a few little flakey, diaphonous clots of blood floating around.  I was told this was normal.

Feel free to post any further questions.  Moss
