Have any of you ladies taken Pivmecillinam for uti?
Posted , 3 users are following.
So I keep getting recurring uti. I had a bout of antibiotics (called nitrofouratoin) which made my cfs/me symptoms so much worse. I had some helpful feedback from a few of you to try a few other things e.g sodium citrate powder (which I’ve had 2 lots of over the weeks) I’m now taking triple strength cranberry tablets, which is keeping the burn at bay but only talking the edge off, I feel it still lingering. The docs given me Pivmecillinam antibiotics as a stand by but feel reluctant to take as the last lot made me so much more poorly. I know we’re all different & drugs effect us all differently but just wondered in general if any one has had good results with these? I’ve also researched uva ursa & have ordered some in the mean while with the hope I will get some relief (altough it seems something you have to keep taking, which I’d rather not really) Can anyone shine some light?

Hi,
Think i mentioned potassium citrate liquid in another post? This helped me when i was in so much pain down there that i couldn't walk and at worse was sweating and shaking with the pain. No idea what sodium citrate powder will do....
I've had uti's all my life and have not had a bad one like the last one in all that time. You have to drink and drink lots of liquids or the infection stays dormant i have read. This is why they say to "flush out" the infection. Also, don't use soaps down there until this clears up as it irritates the lining of the urethra. You could ask for an ultrasound of your bladder? It will probably show urine crystals which is evidence of infection.
Advice wise, which i follow from urinary specialist doctors and nurses: no nylon pants, avoid strong perfumes (including fabric detergent) make sure you totally empty your bladder each time, wipe front to back. Other advice is, go for a wee after sex and make sure your partner is hygenic but again, no strong perfumes on anything that will be intimately near you.
Diet can play a huge part too. Sugar and yeast really don't help. Sugar and uti's unfortunately go together and bacteria breeds better in excess sugar. Again drinking lots of plain water will help.
I used to suffer constantly so believe me, i can understand how horrible it is.
Also, did you know that some bubblebath brands now put a warning on their products that using their products too often can lead to cystitis?
Really hope that helps.

Hi Beverly,
Thank you so much for your helpful advice. I couldn’t get the potassium citrate so my friend went to boots chemist & they recommended the sodium citrate powders. It did do the trick but when I finished them it comes back.
I follow most of your advice as have also suffered thrush over the years. I always shower in aqueous cream, never nothing else as hyper sensitive to perfumed products. My partner uses simple shower gel & is scrupulously clean. I have a fairly strict sugar free diet (some things you can’t avoid - even natural sugars) i only drink bottled water- about 1 1/2 to 2ltr a day. I have hot water & slice of lemon 1st thing but have cut this out last few days as may be too acidic & having echinacea tea for a few days. Always wear cotton undies. As I said I’ve read about uva ursi so will give it a try just hope I don’t have to resort to antibiotics again. When you took the potassium citrate did it take it away completely? If so how long did it take?
Thank you

Hi pet,
Yes it went completely away with the potassium citrate. I would say after about 3 days of getting a new bottle and having water in a different county. I'd say i had the infection about a week in total?
If you keep getting thrush too, it maybe something in your diet that's triggering the issues? I don't have wheat or dairy and have found products with yeast, eg wheat free bread, now makes me balloon where i didn't used to have that issue. I think cfs/me really messes around with our system 😐

Hi again, Rye is a different grain to wheat and tends to be much darker in colour. Some rye bread still contains wheat as a filler and to make it less dense It's been over 20 years since i ate wheat bread but wheat turns up in all kinds of things including wash products! It gives me rashes and makes me itch which dairy products do too. Both also affect me digestively.

It’s a mindfueld & quite confusing knowing what to eat & cut out 🙄

It is to an extent because in the uk there is no law for manufacturers to state they have changed a recipe of a product to something that now contains milk or wheat or fish or anything else apart from they started to put "may contain" to cover their backs and make it clear if it has nuts. I have messed up a few times with products changing recipes and me ending up eating something I've had for years only to start getting a rash, itching or bloating or worse. Someone wrote on a different discussion that the person should prepare their own healthy fresh food which made me smile because i really wish i had that kind of energy to eat that well!

Sorry for the late response, I usually get an email to say I received a response but never.. Yes I always think the same - if I only had the energy to prep foods from scratch & grow my own veg etc..Maybe if we win the lottery we could get a personae achef hey... I think we can dream on.. I don’t even do the lottery so will only be a dream, ha.

Hi pet,
Yes, I've not had notifications a lot on this site also, half of those i do get go to spam. I don't understand why if the system is happy to accept half of them it doesn't the others?!
How are you feeling at the moment? Hope the symptoms are still nearly clear. Do you also get cloudy urine with no other symptoms sometimes? I drink a lot more than i used to but occasionally get this and then it just disappears.

Hi there,
It seems to be settling down a little today, although I won’t make the same mistake I did last week & leave the remedies off just yet. I’ll keep taking them for a good week or so till it feels back to 100% again.
Generally it’s really wiped me out over the last 5-6 weeks as feel my body is working harder to fight off the infection.,I’ll be glad when it’s gone & I can get back to a routine as it’s been all out of sinc with the added loo visits etc. I’ve been taking something new which I feel is helping me with sleep & feel calmer but don’t want to report too much on it at the minute untill I get back to my “norm” then I’ll know how it is really working.

Hi Pet,
Hope that things settle for you soon. It get frustrating when we end up getting recurrent symptoms like this. Any extra pressure really seems to knock the system out when you have cfs/me and takes longer to get back to "normal"
Hope your new sleep and feeling calmer remedy helps too.

I am so grateful for this forum. People are always there for support when we don’t know who to turn to for advice when no one else understands.
Take care

Yep, hear you there ! People don't seem to get it unless they have had it or watched someone close to them with it. Even then no guarantee they'll understand the complexities.

Hi Pet. My daughter had good luck with uva urci. But she has to take it right away , first signs and takes it for a week or two i think. Doesn't take it all the time . Plus takes cranberry pills alot also. She has recently cut wheat sugar and dairy also and seems to help. I suggested she put coconut oil down there as a lube or before she rides the gym bicycle since that seemed to trigger it alot. It is antibacterial and antifungal so im thinking it would help also. I actually use it for dryness and atrophy. Love it. Use it for many things. Good luck. But yes sometimes she has to do a good round of antibiotics if she doesnt catch it.

Hi Tracy,
Thanks for the feed back on the Uva ursi. I’ve ordered some & also getting my daughter to find me some potassium citrate hopefully. I’m with you in the coconut oil.. I have been inserting below every evening before bed & eventually got rid of my bacterial vaginitis I’d had for years & does usually keep things at bay. I wonder if the heat exasperated things maybe. Who knows, but yes agree on the brilliance of coconut oil / I also use it for everything
