Have I done any damage!

I had scarf osteotomy ans also reverse scarf done on Saturday.Had nerve block done so couldn`t feel my foot for a day and a half it was totally numb.Unfortunately I was getting out of bed the night I had this operation and went right over on to my ankle I was wearing shoe that I have to wear in bed as well.I felt nothing, now 2 days on i`ve just noticed my ankle and heel are badly bruised(thought I had got away with it).Ankle sore to the touch but seems ok standing and not swollen, anyone else done this after surgery before nerve block wore off.?Not quite sure what to do about it the thought of going back to hospital again fills me with dread, also not supposed to walk far(only toilet and kitchen for food)rest of the time my foot has to be elevated so dont want to walk on it any more than I have to.

Hi Marilyn, Ouch, that sounds painfull. I am just learning about having bunions operated on so I am guessing that as you were wearing your (special?) shoe, your foot would be have been splinted and well supported? If so, I would imagine you've badly bruised the muscles and tissue around your ankle. Let's hope so. I'm sure the other ladies in this group would be able to comment more. Better to be honest and tell the hospital next time you go though. Good luck and please take care. LadyPink

Thank you for quick reply Ladypink,my foot is bandaged up no splints just a special shoe to stop my toes touching ground. The sole is about 2 inches thick but my ankle still ended up touching the floor and foot was all twisted as well.I also think its probably soft tissue damage but I also have screws in my toes, hope they haven`t been affected by it.I know I will probably have to go hospital to have it looked at but i`m just so tired as dont sleep longer than a couple of hours at night(with my boot on it keeps me awake)so just trying to put it off for today.I live on my own but have daughter nearby and she wants me to see someone straight away I just dont feel up to it right now not got the energy.

I am suprised you have to wear the shoe to bed. I take mine off whenever I am not walking and I am using crutches most of the time. I am almost 3 weeks post op. You poor thing. But as your surgery is so recent I agree you should have it checked as soon as you can. Hope all goes well

Hi Fran yes I have to wear it for the first 2weeks all the time even in bed then I have check up with doc to see how it`s healed.following that I still have to wear it for another 6wks or so but can take it off in bed. It`s just so awkward trying to sleep with leg up on pillows and this massive shoe.I also have crutches too for a few weeks.

Did you have key-hole surgery.? Talking to various people on the forum it is amazing how many variations there are ......I guess each procedure is slightly different, or maybe it depends upon the surgeon. My physio today said very soon I could do some swimming. The other thing is that I normally never sit still, either walking, riding, yoga or the best exercise ever...housework. The family are a bit over it I feal . The novelty has worn off. However probably better in the long run that eating is an effort.....because with no exercise I don't want to grow our of my clothes.

it is almost midnight....so signing off for today...

Sleep well fran.No I didn`t have keyhole surgery, there are a lot of variations on how these ops are done think you`re right it`s up to surgeon doing what he thinks is right for each patient.

I also sprained and bruised my ankle, tho not while my feet were numb.  It was a couple of weeks after surgery.  I think you'll be fine.  But it will take a couple of weeks. Mine is finally gone with no bad results to my toe. When I fell, I just sat in my closet and began to cry.  I had the same fear that I'd have to do the surgery all over again. But I tthink those shoes or splints they give us are there for that reason....to protect our operated area in case we fall or someone steps on our toe.  Just be careful.

Hi joyce thanks for replying glad it`s not just me then who does these things.Hopefully i`ve done the same as you and not caused any lasting damage.I went straight back to bed after I did it as it scared me and was very wary of being on my foot whilst numb after that happened.Good to hear it hasn`t interfered with you`re recovery.

They said you can walk on it to the kitchen and bathroom?   I had the Lapidus procedure and no weight bearing for at least 6 weeks and in a hard cast.  I would think if your foot is not throbbing and its just your ankle sore, then probably no need to go to the hospital.

HI Marilyn. Both my feet were black with bruising after my double op. with ankle blocks and this gradually faded, so I think what you have might just be reaction from your op. If it's really worrying you then get some reassurance either from the hospital or your GP but don't just sit and worry! Keep resting as much as possible with your foot above hip level and give it time, don't rush things. RJB

Hi there RJB  my bruising was definately from going over on my shoe.I have seen my consultant today and he also thought I had a fracture.Went for x rays and there`s no break (i`m so pleased I got away with it).It is sprained though and very sore when touched and the bruising goes up my leg to not just ankle and foot.Thank you to everyone who replied crisis over and I now have bad ankle too but not broken so for once I had luck on my side...Marilyn

Hi Joyce its such a relief to know i`ve not done any damage to my toes(screws still where they should be).In actual fact at this moment in time my ankle actually hurts more than the osteotomy and restricts my walking too. That may change over the next few weeks as things heal, the bruising is half way up to my knee now.Still first week done now, have another week of this shoe 24 hrs a day then I might  get a decent night`s sleep cant sleep any longer than 2hrs at a time then awake most of night all because of this awful shoe I have to wear to bed. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post much apprieciated.

I'm so sorry for you, Marilyn.  I know 'cause I've been there.  Mine went up my whole leg, too, and I remember telling people that my bunionectomy was fine, but my sprain was killing me.  It is completely gone now. But it might take three weeks.  But, don't worry.  It WILL go away.  Bruising is now gone also. Hope you feel better soon!!  Joyce

Marilyn, best to get that seen to, ring the hospital, or your local doctor, even if it turns out to be okay it's best to deal with it now than be faced with months of damage. I hope it all heals soon for you.
