have i had a miscarriage?

I am on a pill which i take consistently to stop my period, however there was a few days here and there where i'd miss it completely or not take it on time.

4 days ago i started to bleed, it didnt look like my normal period was just more brown and thick.

i had period cramps just like normal, i used to suffer really bad periods hence why i got the pill to stop them,

the day i started bleeding my boyfriend and i went to the gym, i felt fine, got back home and i was floored with the worst pain i've ever experienced, my back and my tummy was in agony, the pain kept coming and going but when it came it was like hell. I actually felt like i was about to give birth.

the pain went away after about an hour and i went to sleep, woke up in the morning to find a big tissue like substance covered in blood.

i was so worried this was a miscarriage, i took a pregnancy test which was negative.

i phoned NHS 24 they advised me to go to a&e.. of which the doctor there was very nasty, unhelpful and made me feel very uncomfortable, told me i shouldnt of came to a&e, it probably was a miscarriage and that i should take paracetamol.

after having no help whatsoever from him, i now feel embarrassed to go elsewhere for advice as he just made me feel so stupid.

do you know what this could be? has anyone experienced anything like this?
