I was dx with ulceratived colitis in 2012 and have tried two types of medicine that gave me bad side effects. I tried it for 4 months until i started taking acidiphilus and drinking a lot of water. I do not flare and this probiotic has helped more than an expensive medication.

Your welcome I would suggest starting off at a million if your not used to taking it because it can cause bloating and gas if you start out at a high amount. Than after a while your body will let you know when you can start a billion a day. Good luck smile

Sorry and also how long does it take to work?

You get it in the vitamin section of any cvs or health store. You can get chewable tablet or ones you swallow and it doesn't take long to notice a difference. Look online and search acidiphilus. Uc patients do not have a lot of good bacteria in our gut, this probiotic gives us the good bacteria. You can also take a b complex daily too that will help too because it has vitamin c and d for the immune system and folio acid that helps produce more acidphilus

Hi fellow sufferers, I've recently had an ileostomy having had UC (distal) for 23 years. Firstly I'm no doctor so i can only speak from my own experiences. I can't add a lot of alternatives to easing your pain Stan sorry mate but i just wanted to say i also used heat treatment. I used one of those bean bags for the microwave, that i found was the only relief for me. Definitely have a low fibre diet as the small intestines finds it difficult to digest consequently your ulcers are getting irritated when it reaches them. I tried a few alternatives such as pro-biotics etc but they didn't help me. I found it very difficult to weed out certain foods/drinks because of the colitis coming and going so intermittently. Most of the time when i thought leaving out certain things had helped it actually hadn't it was just coincidence that the colitis had gone. This may not be for everyone but i found having a good cry helped whether there's any physical reason to that i don't have a clue but i always felt better after so stop trying to be tough is my advise. Lastly, if your still reading that is, personally i was offered the operation quite a few times over the years but always decided against it because i just couldn't face having this bag hanging from my stomach. If i had it all to go through again i wouldn't hesitate despite the fact i had the most horrendous four weeks of my life in hospital.
