Have you found Buscopan helpful?

When I was first diagnosed with IBS, six years ago, I was prescribed Mebeverine.  This didn't really help at all and I continued to have pain and suffer from diarrhoea.  I didn't think my GP would be able to help any further and so just struggled on.  I finally mentioned it to my GP yesterday and he decided to get me to try Buscopan.  I had thought Mebeverine and Buscopan were the same thing - as I knew they were both antispasmodics - but he explained that they were different.

I'm taking 3 10mg tablets a day.  I just wondered if others are on Buscopan and have found it useful.  I know it's supposed to help with the pain, but will this also reduce the diarrhoea?

I was put on Mebeverine for IBS and it was highly toxic for me and it did nothing for my pain.  I threw them out and tried Buscopan and it helped the pain a lot with no side effects. It is an anti spasmodic that is designed to deal with pain.  I don't think it helps with bowel habit changes like diarrhoea.  For diarrhoea, try Imodium or you could try natural remedies like bananas or rice which help bind you up so long as they don't trigger symptoms.

I find it better than mebeverane. It won't do anything for diarrhoea though.

Thank you Pippa and Leeniepie.  I must admit that, although I've only been taking the tablets for three days, I haven't had any severe pain - only a bit of a niggle - which is much better than when I was using Mebeverine.  And you're right, I've still got the diarrhoea!

Have you tried the Low Fodmap diet to see if food could be triggering diarrhoea?

I'm about to give that a try, Pippa - have sent for  a book - so, fingers crossed.
