Have you watched a video of THR ?

I have seen it many times live recording on u tube and virtual. There are special tables designed to X-ray the implant on the table to match up hip length, even tables designerd with ski boots to hold legs straight during surgery and to drop low to implant the femur component without disturbing muscle, ligaments and tissue thru anterior approach. Ski boots only in California. Hehe.

Always I ask before surgery what manufacturer/model to look the surgery up on YouTube each one is different. Also be sure there are no metal on metal components can cause serious THR failure.

How many THR per year of the same model does the surgeon implant and the success rate, as well as how long the model has been in the current market. The is a registry of EVERY joint implant DONE the UK, Scotland and Australia. The US has just started a registry. KEEPS up with all the results ages, surgeons and manufacturers. And much more.

Watching the THR process helped me understand how critically important it was for the experienced surgeon to be very familiar with the same techniques and have good surgical assistants to see and hear the explanation as the surgeon proceeds thru surgery on you tube.

How many know the name of the manufacturer and seen the implant components you sport. It's all on the OR REPORT. The registration # is on each kit. Each hip kit has many different sizes included in the kit for the femur and ball joint with liners. Screws are sometimes included if needed. Some are press fit others are cemented in with antibiotics. All with designs to fit each individual patient.

Usually today leg length is not as much a problem due to new techniques and better quality of implants.

Anyone have any thing more to ask their surgeons before surgery? It really quite an art replacing any joint. Improves our quality of life.

dear hope4cure,  yes, I have watched the THR live video twice - The 1st time was about 15 days post-op from 1st THR surgery --- goodness, what an eye-opener - I was so humbled and in awe of my body's ability to heal and repair the onslaught ... the skill of surgeon and team ... It is not for the weak of stomach and I am not sure how I would have felt if I saw this video pre-surgery ... fortunately there is also a 3D animated version ... less bloody ... While in the OR for 2nd THR I asked the surgeon to handle me with care this time as I was so bruised and in pain from the twisting etc. I think he listened as I had no bruises ... How are you doing otherwise, darling .... big warm hug renee

Watched it, and heard my own - both the initial surgery and my revision.

Sounded more like a car mechanic's workshop than a hospital surprised

Not a bad idea to find out what the surgeon intends to use - I have a 'parts list' of the bits he inserted into my leg - Titanium stem, Titanium cup, ceramic insert, ceramic head, and 2 titanium screws.

Zimmer & Stryker . What matching accessories? They come in a huge kit with different sizes as the surgeon removes the diseased joint picks the new components with the right fit out of many for femor , ball joint.

hows the new self lubricating joint doing. I need revision soon and will ask about the BioMet. Read good things about it.

Any  further info  you personally have thru ur experience it would be lovely to share.

      i will PM U,

I was trying to be funny ... but seriously, I do have BioMet Exceed ABT, all uncemented with titanium stem and acetabular shell, and ceramic ball and acetabular insert (that's the bit that is stuck at the wrong angle in my hip).

I have had absolutely no OA pain since the operation - so that is very pleasing, I just wish they had taken more care in putting the parts into the right position, and (probably more importantly) had looked at the darned X-Rays they took to check if they were in the right place before discharging me from hospital.

Great accessories as that was a comment I took literally! Oops!

i hope you can get things sorted out.i too wished that they considered the xrays after implant. Usually that's the most important step to X-ray the implant and match to origional X-ray for a template match up is usually made by the surgeon before the implant . Then X-ray to match template before they close up the incision. I am baffled as to how that step was nor evaluated properly!

The strangest  things can happen during THR. Take care and in time you will be back to riding your bike farther as times moves on!

I have waychedsurgeries, including open heart. The bone surgeries were the only ones that felt funky.I don't know if I want to see it

That's ok it's a personal choice. Some are virtual demonstrations of THR others are real joint replacements in real time. My personal choice seeing the surgery how each component replaced helps me understand the mechanics of the joint and help preserve the replacements.
