Having a 2nd Stapectomny, any long term side effects?

Hi
Wanted to share my experience and get any thoughts/ opinions on additional symtoms that other people may have.
I had a right ear Stapectomy in May 2015 after suffering with loss of hearing for about 18 months. Up untl that point it was unconfirmed if i had Octosclerois but the surgeon confirmed 100% after the operation.
The procedure itself went great and took about an hour under a general. When i woke the surgeon was excited and said that it was successful and if i could hear improvement but was too groggy to really register. over the coming hour i could hear telephone conversations 40ft away that i wouldn;t have hear before which was great.
When i got home, i felt generaly fine and felt i could move around freely, starting watching TV, eating dinner with my girlfriend and listen more to want was being said. Although after about an hour i had bleeding in my ears and was worried that the packing had come loss and went to A&E to check but was fine.
All in all, it went great and my hearing had improved and was so happy to hear full conversations again. About 9 months after the op though, i started to get some new sensations such as when flying in a plane, it i did a little air burp or yawned, i felt a split second dizzy sensation in my operated ear, which really dis-oriented me. I now sometimes get this in everyday life, if i yawn in bed or if i am driving over a high hill, if i swallow or burp i can get split second dizziness like someone is pushing on my balance centre in my ear.
More annoying is that when i walk now, i feel like my head is very heavy and sometimes feel slightly dizzy / nauseaus. If i stand on a crowded train, i start to feel nauseas and dizzy also and often have to get off.
Over the past few months i have noticed the same symtoms in my left ear ( tinnitus, hearing drop, rushing noise when i open my mouth, confused by background noise when trying to hear someone ) and recently had a hearing test which showed that the hearing is lower in this ear then my operated ear which leads me to think that i will have to get the right ear done in about the next 6 months.
Am wondering if anyone has had any symtoms like this 9-12 months on from a stapectomy and any advice?
Thanks
Had a MRI scan done by the surgeon and he the prothesis is in perfect condition

Hi Johnog,
It was a relief to read your story of the success of your Stapedectomy, and that your hearing improved soon after your op. I have had Oteosclerosis for many years and now am virtually stone deaf without my hearing aids in both ears.
I was offered the Op over a year ago, but left it on hold, now thinking seriously of having op, but am nervous & worried about the op and after effects! am 68.
Please can you tell me how you felt prior to op, and after, as have to decide
whether to go ahead with op! thanks Anthea

Hi Anthea
Thanks for the reply. I was curious, how long had you had octosclresis?
Prior to the op, I could tell that my hearing was getting worse and worse and was really effecting my daily life, particularly at work as o struggled to hear everything said and was self coucious of it and asked most people to repeat everything as I couldn't trust my hearing.
I discussed the options with the surgeon and I felt like it was better to deal with it sooner rather then later ( was 36 at the time ). I was fine about the surgery and quite excited to get it done as I wanted my hearing and normal life back.
The surgery was pain free and went to the the surgery at 3pm and was on my way home at 6.30 pm. The surgeon recommended 2 weeks of rest and stuck to this to ensure best success.
My hearing did improve overall but not to normal levels but what I got back was enough to hear comfortably again.
I do have some slight balance problems from time to time now and this is more to do with pressure such as after a flight or if I'm driving up a large hill.
Now that my second ear is going, I recognise all the symtoms and can say that I will be having a second op after meeting with the surgeon in a few months.
Overall, the op does work well and helps improve my quality of life.
Hope this helps and let me know if you have more specific questions. Goodluck
John

Hi Johnog,
Many thanks! so it sounds like you had a positive outcome after your Stapedectomy.
I have had Oteosclerosis for well over 10 years, possibly 20, but after the Booth sound tests in both ears, it deteriorated as the years went by, and now I cant hear anything without my Hearing Aids! I am getting another referrel back to
ENT after attending in January 2015, to discuss further with consultant about going for Op ugh! yes am scared about having such a delicate op in the inner ear, and wonder if it will all go well? but am told over 90% of ops are a success,
tho one could go completely deaf, or it only last a few weeks!
It seems that most of the patients on this Forum who have gone for S. op
have success, with minor side effects, of dizziness, noises in ear after op.
will keep reading any info. on this site which will persuade me to be more
excited?? & positive about having S.
Really appreciate you replying to my queries. All the best. anthea
