Having a cystoscopy next week (Flexible). Just a bit uneasy about it.

Having my cystoscopy on Wednesday next week. Not had one before. I am led to believe it only takes a few minutes but on my appointment letter it says I could be at the hospital for 4 hours! Cant imagine why. Anyway I would be interested to hear about other peoples (Womens) experiences and what to expect. Thank you.

    Hi Shirley,

    I know you wanted women’s advice but I thought I would share mine as a man.

    I have had 3 in the past, 1 done at the one stop clinic which is where they did different tests and that lasted about 3 hrs from arrival to seeing the dr having the tests and seeing him again. My second was done as an inpatient again I was awake for this and it was 5 mins and all over. The 3rd I don’t remember as I was put to sleep but I was having an operation on my prostate.

    The 2 times I was awake they gave me a local numbing gel (. Instogel) and I just felt a little pulling and pushing not major discomfort.

    What I would say is drink plenty of water before ( if you can ) and after, this will just help you pass urine as it can sting the first few times you pass urine especially if it’s concentrated.

      Hi Buggsy, Thanks for your message. Good to know when you the 2 cystoscopys done when you were awake, that you just felt a bit of pushing and pulling and not major discomfort.

      Wont be going with a full bladder though as part of my problem is urgency and so I woudnt want to end up in that situation with a full bladder as Im sure you can understand. I will drink more once I get home though.

      I was put to sleep for this surgery supa pubic so I have no idea what happened good luck but one thing is, it’s great I have got rid of mine urinery infections 

      Just got me stitches removed today after 10 days

    I had one about 2 years ago. I thought the actual procedure was OK just a bit uncomfortable at the beginning when its being inserted but only for just a few seconds and it was all done in about 5 minutes. You will need to wee quite a lot afterwards and they will give you some tablets to avoid you getting an infection.The only thing was the waiting to get it done. As an outpatient you are basically in a queue waiting for your turn. I was waiting nearly 4 hours so that is why they advise you that you could be there that long. I would take someone along with you if you can for a bit of company whilst you wait. Don't worry and try to stay calm it will all be over in a flash. Take care.

      Thanks Jayneeliz. Glad you thought the procedure was ok and just a bit uncomfortable. Yes I thought it was a quick procedure. 5 minutes isnt too bad is it. Cant imagine how much liquid they will put into my bladder but I will be scared of having an accident. Glad to hear they will give me some anti-biotics as I have 2 false hips and I dread the thought of any infection reaching them. I will have to be prepared for a possible long wait then though my appointment time is actually at 2.15pm on Wednesday. I will take a book with me just incase. There is nobody I can take with me. Used to hospital appointments etc on my own anyway. Thanks again. I will try and not worry and try to stay calm too. Have a good weekend. :-)

    I had it 10 days ago I was called in at 7am and I was done by afternoon it does take a few hours they monitor you to see how you are and because you haven’t eaten they will offer toast and drink it’s their procedure they need to see you are ok before discharged

Do you mean that you were put to sleep for the procedure? I wont be put to sleep. Theyve told me they will be using a numbing gel.

      Don’t worry everything would be fine their is two ways they do it I was put to sleep so I didn’t felt anything but even if you are awake I don’t think you will feel anything they will numb the area before doing it 

      I hope it goes well 

      Stay positive it’s only a minor surgery

    Hi shirley. Just want to tell you not to worry. I had one done, and was awake. They used a numbing gel first, then the doctor inserted the instrument. From start to finish, I would say it took about 5 minutes, maybe less. Once he was in the bladder, all I felt was pressure (no pain), similar to a pelvic exam. Let us know how it goes.

      Thanks terri. Will try and not worry. I will be awake for mine on Wednesday too. Glad it only takes 5 minutes or so. Will let you know how it goes when I am home on Wednesday evening.

    Hi, Shirley,  I am 73 yrs old male I have had one done and there is No pain just a little pushing and cool feeling when the Dr inserted water. Now I could see  my self on screen as the Dr explained the producer I could see white stuff floating around I asked what was all of that and the Dr said it was the infection or bacteria, But a long course of antibiotics like a month  would get rid of the bacteria But there was no cancer so I was very happy ,But he did say that after a month or so he'd do it all again to check it out So that will be something to look forward to

      Thanks David for your message. Glad you said there is no pain. Just a bit of pushing and a cool feeling. So glad they found no cancer. Im pleased to hear that too. Hope the antibiotics soon clear the bacteria and that all is clear when you go back in a month.

    Re the flexible Cystoscopy last week, it never happened. I got to the hospital on time. Sat waiting in reception only 5 minutes when the nurse called me through and put me on a ward! I wasn't expecting that! She went through all my details then told me to put my hospital gown on whilst she tested my water sample.  When she came back she said that she could not do the Cystoscopy as I had got a UTI! I really wasn't expecting that. I am 61 and have had loads of UTIs over the years but 99 times out of a 100, I have known because it was extremely painful weeing. Only twice has that not been my experience of a UTI, the 2nd time being when I found out up at the hospital last week. So it begs the question what would have happened if they hadn't found it? Anyway my Cystoscopy has been postponed till next week. I have of course been on antibiotics for a week. Now heres the thing. 

    I know I have had a lot of urethral soreness and burning over the last 2 years, a lot of wanting to wee all the time that seems to stem from my sore urethra, even urgency episodes. I always thought it was because there was a problem with my urethra.  But the thing is that I have now finished a weeks worth of antibiotics and the urethral soreness and burning has hardly been there. So I am wondering if all the trouble I have been having with my urethra has in fact been one long recurring UTI!  I dont know. I am only guessing but its strange that I have had a weeks worth of antibiotics and there has been little or no soreness or anything else during that time. 

    The only thing that hasn't altered of course is my bladders and the lack of sensation. After 2 years I doubt that will change. Actually it was exactly 2 years ago today since all this started!  I can cope with the soreness etc, its the anxiety side of it I haven't been coping well with. Anxiety about having an accident in public like I almost did in the crowded town centre 2 years ago today! Never been as terrified in all my life as I was that day.

    Anyway the urgency and feeling I want to wee all the time is tailing off but the anxiety is still there. Could be better but could be worse too. 

    Thats my update since last week.
