Having a few issues after 4 months

Hello all,

I had my TKR of my left knee about 4 months ago and just wanted your opinions about where I am in recovery. I'm able to walk between 5 and 6 thousand steps a day, in multiple walks. and can keep a pretty good stride, at least at the start. My issues are that the knee gets very tight, very fast. I can still bend it with some effort but my balance starts getting a little out of wack. I can go up stairs fairly decent as long as I don't overdo it. Downstairs is very hard still...I can do some but it's hard to do them properly. I'm still experiencing a fair amount of pain....nothing that I can't handle though. Oh, also have lots of clicking while walking. Do you think there is anything to worry about at the 4 month mark?

Thank You,

Kel

At 8 weeks I was still having some issues too but do know what you mean by feeling behind. It's a long term recovery but I'm a short term recoverer. 😃 I hope that things improve for you!

    Hi Kel

I'm 10 months post RTKR.. You are doing well just do what your knee let's you.. I mastered going up stairs around the 4 month mark but going down is more difficult but came around 8 months, but every one is different.. Even now I have to think about it not natural movement. I find using a static bike helps with stiffness and find even know at end of the day after work my knee is stiff but by morning is easier.some days my knee is hardly stiff at all and I think yes!..but then next day back to being stiff it's a very up and down recovery. My knee often clicks my surgeon said this is normal. Good luck with your recovery.

I am just way too impatient.Thank you for your encouragement. I will try to get on the bike ASAP.

It sounds fairly normal to me. It's difficult to compare knees because they're all so different. Take mine, both done a year apart, the second nearly six weeks ago and I could do in 3 weeks what it took me 2 months to attempt last time. The second knee is already more comfortable walking than the first one is 13 months on. I think it depends on how much work is done on the knee, which part of the joint suffers most damage and how the soft tissues are affected.

At 4 months you're only a quarter of the way through the minimum recovery time. My first knee still clicks sometimes and still gives pain coming downstairs. I'm told it's IT band syndrome and should settle in the next 6 months. My walking has been easier since the second knee has been done. With one straight and one crooked knee I felt I was being pulled to the right all the time.

Hang on in there, it will improve. I noticed quite a difference at 6 months and by 9 months was ready to think of having the second one done. Our knees dictate their own recovery it seems.

Thank you for the encouragement. I'll just have to try to be less impatient and to keep moving forward.
