Having a painful time after being diagnosed with Mononucleosi one week ago, any suggestions?

I was diagnosed with mononucleosis exactly one week ago. I am still in a great deal of pain especially on my bulging swollen lymph nodes all around my neck. Since diagnosed last week, I went back to the doctor because nothing was getting better and every source i looked into said there is no treatment aside from rest and drinking fluids. I am struggling to even do those because my neck is painful to lay on while resting and when drinking, it stings when going down my throat. The second doctor prescribed me steroid pills and they have worked better than anything else. The doctor told me my spleen was enlarged and is at risk for rupture. I am experiencing a lot of mono symptoms (i don't have a fever) but the most unbearable for me has been my swollen neck. One of the lymph nodes on my upper left neck has effected my hearing and caused pain in my ear as well. Does anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences with this that they'd like to share? Thanks in advance!

mononucleosis is complete arse. You will need to rest and ride it out. Vitamin C, D and Bee propolis is what I take and that helps, there are no magic pills though I am afraid. Depending on your age it can be a long time till recovery. Once initial symptoms wear off you will feel tired but able to do things as long as you build plenty of rest in to your routine.

    Hi Sarah,

Sorry to hear you've been hit with this virus, it's awful.

I had the sore throat too, but in my case it went away after about a week. During that week I really struggled to sleep or get remotely comfortable, but I pumped myself full of Tylenol (apparently better than Advil or Ibuprofen because it's more gentle on your liver, which can also be aggravated by the virus). Hopefully your sore throat will go away soon and you can get some rest.

My doctor also warned me about spleen rupture. His advice was to steer clear of sport (which I have no problem doing at this point because I still don't have the energy!) and rough contact. Essentially - if you feel a sharp or severe pain on the upper left side of your abdomen, go to the ER. Other than that there's not a lot you can do other than rest.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for you 😃

    Hi Sarah,

So sorry to hear you're going through these awful symptoms and dealing with mono, I really empathise having been through the virus many years ago.

The swollen neck glands can be so painful and horrible to deal with. It's really important at this acute phase to get plenty of rest and drink fluids, etc, as you say. It's not the kind of virus unfortunately like a cold or flu that you can try and push through, so would definitely encourage to put your health first and take some time out from any work / studies / other stresses if you can, and just look after yourself.

It's also very important with your spleen to be very careful and follow the doctor's advice with this - if there is a risk of rupture, be extra careful in protecting that area and not doing any exercise or quick movements around that area which might affect things.

Taking vitamins and herbs can be really helpful when going through mono Sarah - things that helped me included taking a good strong multi-vitamin per day (I take Immunace Extra here in the UK), higher doses of Vitamin C, a B complex vitamin per day, Co-enzyme Q10 and immune boosting herbs like siberian ginseng and echinacea. But remember I'm no expert on this stuff only going on what helped me, it's important to check for any interactions with other medication or conditions before taking supplements - especially when your spleen is swollen it's VERY important to check and get the right advice that you are not taking anything which could potentially cause harm.

But the main thing I want to say is that you will get better! This is a horrible virus to go through and it can take a little time to get fully over it, so make sure you get plenty of rest but absolutely doing the right things in getting plenty of rest, etc, at this stage can really help the recovery process. Thinking about you and message any time - it's a great forum on here with some good and encouraging people who truly know how awful this virus is and also will tell you that there is hope and complete recovery with this thing after a while and with God's help!

    Craig
