Having a thyroidectomy Monday

I would love to know what to expect, what to eat after stuff like that. I was told no driving for 2 weeks. I have a multinodule goiter. No Other symptoms except growth. I was told I will be given synthroid. Will I gain weight? I've lost 20lbs by eating better and I don't want it back. Any advice is great just to scare me 😉 I have bad anxiety. Thanks

Hi, I had half my thyroid removed in August and the second half removed two weeks later.
The first night I stayed in hospital, nicely drugged up, wasn't in too much pain if I'm honest, just uncomfortable, then was sent home the following morning.
I didn't find eating a problem, was on pain killers for about a week, I think the worst bit was trying to sleep upright, just get yourself loads of pillows and it's ok though.
Not driving is about you being comfortable to turn your neck quickly with the confidence you won't split it open.
Without a thyroid you will need replacement drugs, I'm on levothyroxine only and am still trying to get it right. I've gained a bit of weight but getting my medication right is the most important thing for me at the moment, I can worry about the weight afterwards
There's nothing too much to be anxious about though

Had my thyroid removed a few years ago it was uncumfortable after the op due to the tubes at each end of wound to drain blood but not painfull. As with any op you have to take your time to get better.
Good luck and dont worry

Hello Halle,
Don't worry this is a bread & butter operation to an ENT surgeon. I had left hemi thyroidectomy in March 2015 & completion thyroidectomy May 2015, the biggest nodule had to be sent to another hospital for analysis! The op is easy, not too much pain, just overnight stay in hospital. More discomfort than anything. Luckily I had no drains put in! A couple of weeks not driving is not too bad.
Not sure about Synthroid as I am on Levothyroxine 125mcg & it took a long time for me to settle on the Levothyroxine.! So can't advise on your weight.
Do not stress over this, you will be back at home, feet up, before you know it!
Take care
Marilyn
