Having hip replacement in 2 weeks.

Posted , 6 users are following.

Had spinal column surgery in June. L1 to S1 plus titanium rods for retro scoliosis. After about 6 weeks I was swimming driving walking etc but then the hip started up again. I have walked favouring the left side all my life because of scoliosis and damaged the hip. I am 45 years old. Right now I have been on bed rest for 6 weeks the pain is excruciating and I don't want to take analgesics. Does it get better (the pain) after the surgery? I am at the end of my rope. Please give me some feedback.

Sounds like you've been through enough.

I had THR in April. i have no OA pain whatsoever in my hip. But I do have an achy feeling. That makes my life so much easier to handle!

I could rarely walk for more than 10-15 minutes before surgery. Now I walk at our local mall 3 days a week for abou 45 minutes.

There are things I can't do but the trade off was worth it!

Oh, yes! I had bone-on-bone OA in my hip and, man, could it hurt. Haven't had a twinge in my hip joint since the surgery. It's all titanium and ceramic there now! Certainly there is pain in the surrounding tissues that get rearranged during surgery, but that heals. And you will have some work to do after that major healing is done around the hip, getting the rest of your muscles evened out in strength and getting straightened out after a lifetime of scoliosis, but things should be much better after THR. Wishing you all the best. I hope you can read up on this forum, so you'll get an idea of what the experience is like.

My I ask why you do not want to take analgesics?  Yes the pain does get better after surgery.  Hang in there.  I am so sorry you are suffering so.  You have been through a lot.  How soon will you be able to have the hip surgery?

Thanks so much for your speedy feedback. I don't take the analgesics because they don't help and make me very jumpy (tramadol). I live in Mexico although I am Canadian and doctors here are very hesitant to prescribe stronger meds. In 2 weeks I go for surgery. I just want my life back. I have been in pjs for a month and have lost about 22 lbs. I am not overweight but now I am quite slim and want to dress up go shopping out to the movies dance with my husband etc not be stuck in bed like an invalid with terrible pain.. This circumstance there is light at the end of the tunnel.

That light is so refreshing!  Being an invalid with terrible pain is horrible.  I have been there, only I wish I would have lost weight instead of gain it!  I am 11 months out from a revision surgery and slowly but surely, I am regaining my life.  I have not regained my figure as of yet, but that will come too.  I wish you the very best!

      Hugs

Just a quick update...my surgen had a massive heart attack and now is under treatment. I have had to find a new surgeon. Fortunately I have 2 recommendations  that I will see on Monday.. Hopefully one of them will be the right one. Quick question. I am on bed rest and have been for a month  or 6 weeks. I can only walk short distances with crutches maybe 5 minutes and sitting hurts the hip too much. Is bed rest the best I can do until surgery?
