Having manual manipulation under anesthesia following TKR

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 9 weeks out from my TKR and my ROM is only 85/17 so I am scheduled for MUA next week.  I would like to hear from anyone who has had this.  Specifically does the CPM hurt?  Do you continue on pain meds after MUA?  Do u have complete range as oon as u go to PT?

I am 8 months post TKR and had MUI after 2 months of surgery.  I was only 62 ROM, and got to 125.  I am 123 today, and continue to bike to maintain.

It takes alot of work.  You will be doing PT immediatly after procedure, but it is sooo worth it.  Work, work, work, and you will get there.  It has been a long, hard road, but I am so happy to finally be pain free.  Good luck Amy.  You will be out and you won't feel it, and hey....you are familiar with pain after having TKR.  Just keep up with pain meds, and work hard smile

Thanks Suzanne. This gives me hope. How long did u have to take pain meds after MUA?  Also, what's a jas brace and is it covered by insurance?  How much does it cost?  Thank you!!

Amy....my Kaiser plan didn't cover it so I paid $250.00 a month for 3 months and it really helped my bend. I wS on pain meds for a good 2 months after manipulation and took them before PT after so I could do the work. I live in Southrn Ca. Stay with all of these people on this site. You all were a Godsend every day🙏🏻❤️😀

JAS brace was an adjustable brace you crank up your bend with.

thank you Suzanne for your kind words.  I feel like a drug addict every time I get a new Rx but I'm in so much pain and could never do PT without them.  I ride the bike for 15 min every day but my legs don't go all the way around.  I can't wait to be where you are with the bike!  U r an inspiration!

Had my mua done 10-2-2015. You get a pain block in the thigh

so when you wake there's no immediate pain this usually lasts

12 to 48 hours, mine lasted 30 hours. You then go straight to pt

there you work on just sliding exercises for rom you should be

doing this 5 days a week for 2 wks make sure you have your cpm ready I just received mine and had lost 20 degrees because

the supplier didn't follow through to get me one so I went and

picked one up from a different place. Yes the cpm does hurt but

if you started with the pain blocker it shouldn't be too bad. The

overall pain is similar to having had done a lot of leg exercises

you haven't done in while. So you'll end up with extremely sore

muscles so you might need your meds for a few days but will

get better there after. Keep the cpm going in your down time

and yes you do have full range right after but you must continuestretching with the cpm.

Hope this helped. Here are my numbers

Day of mua 117, on Monday 107 and Tuesday a weak 100, today 97. The cpm is an extremely important part of this end of

    recovery

Ps: take your walker or you'll end up doing a face plant because you won't be able to feel your leg.

Kikomay and Amy.  Not everyone gets the CPM machine.  My Dr. didn't believe in it, just as some don't believe in the brace.  Everyone is different.  I also was put out for my MUA and not given a block.  Again, everyone is different.  Are you guys in Europe?

Do not be dismayed Kikomay, you are still swollen, and you will get more ROM after they quit beating your knee up soooooo much.  Much luck to you both.

Hi Suzanne,  I really appreciate your continued info and support.  I am in northern , VA just outside DC.  I was told I would b put to sleep and then I am actually staying one night in hospital ( will start PT there) so that they can regulate my pain w IV meds first day.  My pain control has just been so poor.  Happy biking today!

I'm in WA state my doc doesn't believe in them either but after

having had 2 acls replaced and 2 meniscotectomy and 2 tkr

he listened to me and placed the order. After my acls the cpm helped me a great deal. Yes the cpm flexes the joint but it also strectches think about as it flexes it cuases the knee cap

ligament to stretch and the quads too because that is what

happens when stoop down, kneel down and go up stairs, isn't

that what quad stretches help you to do? stretch a tight thigh

that can irritate knees before exercises. My pain and inflammation isn't in the joint but in the muscles and surrounding soft

tissue . The flexing causes the thigh to pull and as this

happens you can feel the tightness over the knee cap start to

loosen up the more the longer your sessions are. No not everyone gets to use a cpm but it really helps in keeping things

loose and moving in the downtime.

My only regret about my lft tkr is not having the cpm from the beginning when I realized I would not be able to stretch right

away or walk when I was in the hospital.

    Hi Amy

I had MUAs on both knees about 5-6 months after my individual surgeries.  The first one straightened my leg brilliantly and I then made great progress. The second one was not successful and I've just had that knee opened up again, and a lot of excess scar tissue removed.  It was great for the first week, but beginning to tighten up again now.

The CPM works well to keep the knee bending and will be a little bit uncomfortable, otherwise it's not stretching the knee.  CPMs do not really help with straightening though.I didn't have an awful lot of pain or meds after either MUA.

Not sure if this will be helpful as I had manipulation after knee surgery many years ago (over 40 years).

I think they probqably do things diffeently now, but when i had it it was extremely painful as soon as I woke up but this did not last long.

So long ago I can't rmember if I went back to physio after manipulation or whether I was just left to get on with it.

I had TKR 3 years ago but did not need a manipulation.

    Good luck with all this.

Take care and keep in touch

    Thinking of you

    Love Sarah xxx
