Having surgery in 2 weeks!

Hello everyone! I'm 39 years old and have had diverticulitis for 5 years now. Been hospitilized 4 times and twice within last 9 months of each other with bad outbreaks. Not to mention the day to day outbreaks. So ive finally elected to have surgery at U of M Hospital in Michigan on JUNE 10th. Getting my sigmoid colon removed. Just wondering (for the people that had the surgery)how the surgery went? How was the pain? Is your quality of life much better now? Recovery time? What to expect going forward? Thank you everyone in advance!

Hi there, I was told after my resection on the 6th of May that my disease is gone and I should have no more issues. As we speak I can eat ANYTHING without any problems. I feel totally healed. Many others I've spoken to that have had this surgery have had no further diverticulitis/diverticuliti problems. So in my opinion I believe you can cure this disease.

My dr told me that its very rare that the disease will come back. In my case my diverticulitus is isolated in my sigmoid colon. I HOPE AND PRAY it doesnt come back. These last 5-6 years have been horrible! Are you bowel movmrnts much better now after surgery too?

Yes they are better. At first I was constipated cause of the epidural. However after that was straightened out I've had no problems. I poop after each meal. And they are the perfect poop lol. No diaherra and no constipation. I used to poop several times in the morning so that has changed. From what I understand what's happening now is more normal. All in all I very pleased with my outcome. I too had my sigmoid colon removed.

The only reason I had issues with food isn't because of the diverticulitis or surgery, it's because of the sepsis and constant use of the antibiotics (they really tear up your stomach). In my case I was told that it was going to take at least a year for my organs to heal, especially my stomach lining. Other than that I'm so so happy I had the surgery done. My doctor told me the same thing, I could eat anything I wanted however I'm finding out after trying different food that's not the case because of the damage the sepsis and antibiotics caused. He also said that as long as I watch what I eat and how much I should be fine.
