Head Banging

[b:f97ba17a36]I have a 14 month old daughter and she went through a stage of head butting people when she didn't get her own way, but now it has turned to head butting the stair gates and walls or whatever she has got in her hand....

I'm worried as i have been told that this could be a sign of ADHD,

Will she grow out of this as she getting older??[/b:f97ba17a36]

That's such a generalisation, head butting is unlikely to be a sign of ADHD and really she's far too young for that kind of label. I think it's just normal frustration from a young child who wants their own way. Wait till she's older and has more language...

My daughter, who is now almost 8, used to throw herself backwards to bang her head whenever she was angry or frustrated.  Neither of my older kids had done it, so I was concerned, but the pediatrician kept reassuring me that it was normal infant and toddler behavior.  It's just a way of expressing themselves when they don't yet have the language skills to do so verbally.

It stopped when my daughter started increasing her verbal skills and was able to express herself via words rather than actions.  She's now a very bright, happy and healthy little girl with no behavioral issues aside from the occasional attitude problem.

Head banging is surprisingly common. Up to 20 percent of babies and toddlers bang their head on purpose, although boys are three times more likely to do it than girls. Head banging often starts in the second half of the first year and peaks between 18 and 24 months of age. A child's head banging habit may last for several months, or even years, though most children outgrow it by age 3.
