Head pressure, Brain fog, odd head sensation, feeling detached

Hi all,

I decided to become a member and make a post here after reading the forums for quite a while, great site by the way.

I am currently suffering with various symptoms and am in a bad way and just don't know where to turn any more so thought I would post here and see if anyone has any similar experiences or advice.

So first of I am male and 26 years old. I have been suffering with the symptoms in the title pretty consistently for about 2 and a half years now. I used to have some relief from the symptoms for a day or 2 here and there or maybe a bit of relief for a few hours in the day but recently the symptoms are pretty much constant and I cannot shake them.

I have an overall mild pressure feeling in the head, its not painful but is just very aggravating and feels really strange. I also have extreme brain fog with this and like a fuzzy head, there is a constant cloud over my brain and I never have any mental clarity or a clear head. My cognitive function is extremely poor now, my short term memory is non existent, its scarily bad. I often feel, detached from reality when the symptoms are bad and suffer from de-realisation, although I think this may be down to some anxiety and depression I experience when the symptoms run me down. I also get random sharp cramping pains in the head, they are quite painful but do not bother me so much as they only usually last a second or 2, it varies on how many I get of these each day but its usually less than 5. It often feels as though my brain is malfunctioning somehow and my cognitive function and senses are all out of whack, its hard to explain. There can sometimes be a build up of these symptoms throughout the day and by the night I can feel like I somehow how the flu without a fever? Like I have the head pressure, completely foggy headed, I feel super unwell, weak, sometimes even start feeling cold. Also have night sweats usually for about 4 or 5 days each month, there doesnt seem to be any sort of pattern to them that I can notice, so not sure if they are relevant. Another thing I have is ringing in ears which is mild but seems to have gotten worse recently if that sounds relevant at all. The main thing that gets me is the odd head pressure/sensation and the utterly life hindering brain fog, my brain feels like it is coated in a dark blanket constantly.

I do suffer from anxiety, I know many of these symptoms can be caused or made worse by these symptoms. I dont doubt that anxiety is a contributing factor and the way I think about they symptoms probably makes them worse but I have come a long long way with my anxiety, I have good control over it, I haven't had a panic attack in a couple of years, I manage to control most of my concious anxiety and stay in a positive mindset. No doubt I still have some subconscious anxiety underlying and I am working on that but I am not convinced this is the route cause of my symptoms. I am in therapy for my anxiety. I do not feel I will ever fully recover while I have these symptoms hanging over me though.

I have been to the doctor about these symptoms, although I do think I struggle to explain them or put them across very well in the doctors office. I have have blood tests which are all normal. I saw a neurologist couple of years back when this started, had a CT scan which was normal, they put the stabbing pains down to icepick headaches and thought the other symptoms were probably made worse by my anx/depression. Since then I went away and have been on anti depressants etc with no improvement of symptoms. I have also had a few ECGs and a 24hr ECG as I have slow heart rate and low bp so thought maybe the symptoms could be down to low bp and lack of blood to the brain, doctors do not think think this is the case and all my results came back normal. I have recently been back to the neurologist who is referring me for an MRI although he said he is sure there is nothing sinister and thinks the symptoms are probably tension type headaches and made worse by and previous drug use, he only put it down to the drug use when i told him about it though so it seemed like a convenient diagnosis. I forgot to mention I used to take drugs on the weekends socially, cocaine, ketamine and ecstasy on different occasions for a couple of years, I have had periods where I have felt ok since taking these drugs and do not really think they are the cause, I was not an addict this was just one or 2 nights a month at the weekends. So I have an MRI coming up but the neuro thinks it will be clear and obviously I hope it is and I am looking for other answers.

What could be causing these symptoms? Other than anxiety which i no can be a factor, but I have periods where my anxiety is pretty much non existent but these symptoms still build up out of nowhere and persist. I was thinking maybe some sort of allergy could be a possibility, I have tried cutting out gluten and lactose, this didn't seem to make much difference although I didn't stick to this for very long. I actually did a juice fast for 2 weeks with eating nothing other than fruit and veg juice put through a juicer to see if that would help but it didn't really give me any relief. Are there any other stomach issues that could cause this? I never have diarrhoea or constipation, my stools always float recently though, to the point of not being able to flush them, also whenever I have seen chance medicine doctors they check me out and say they think i have issues with digestion, i don't feel i have these issues but do wonder if there might be something in it.

Could there be something going on with the blood vessels in my head? Could it be a spine/posture issue? Some sort of epilepsy or electrical activity in my brain? I just have no idea now and am desperate for some relief. If anyone has any ideas or advice I would really appreciate it.

Oh just to add I am reasonably fit, I try go to the gym a few times a week and I do some weight lifting. I am a normal weight. I have been losing some weight recently which is a concern but I am still in a normal weight range for height and age.

Thanks for reading

Thanks for this info - I’m scheduled to get the Botox injections in early January (32 total shots in head, neck and back) and it took about 6 months to get it approved.  My current diagnosis is “migraines” but it’s really more like a constant brain tingle - it’s horrible and I’m now working part time instead of 60-70 hours a week (which has been my normal for the past 25 years!)

This group has been really informative and my neurologist evens listens to some of the more viable posts!

    Thanks!

I hope you don't have to go back to working 60-70 hour weeks. This is horrible. No one should work so much.

I mean I would get sick just from working like this. Glad you are getting the treatment. Be well.

Hi Terry, I wanted to ask you some questions that I think may be related. Do you regularly drink green tea or coffee? And do you take any other supplements? Thanks for any reply!

Hi guys, I had this for several months. Horrible brain fog and pressure

In my case the cause turned out to be chronic hyperventilation.

Breathing even slightly too fast for long periods of time messes up your blood CO2, which among other things causes less blood to reach your brain. I had no idea you could get so miserable from just breathing too fast.

I don't know if the cause is the same for you. But it is something worth checking out.

Bring down your breathing for a longer period of time. I personally felt like choking/not getting enough air while doing so, but the brain fog and pressure improved. Alternatively you can try hyperventilating on purpose to see if it triggers the same kind of symptoms you are suffering from.

I know this was posted a long time ago but I think a good question would be if you are taking any kind of benzodiazepine either for your anxiety or recreationally. The symptoms described are textbook withdrawal from them. It doesn't take long to develop a physical dependency and people frequently experience withdrawal even between doses.

It really sounds like you have what my daughter has.  It is an autonomic nervous system disorder can Dysautonomia (specifically postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome or POTS).  It is hard to diagnose and some doctors have never even heard of it but you should see a cardiologist or possibly a neurologist and have a tilt table test done.  Good luck to you!

What is the treatment? When was your daughter diagnosed?  How is she doing?

Well sadly there's not a "cure" but there are things that help.  Oddly a high salt diet helps plump up their blood volume so that the blood doesn't pool down in their feet and make them feel lightheaded and dizzy (and possibly pass out).  Other conditions often accompany dysautonomia such as a connective tissue disorder called Ehler's Danlos Syndrome.  My daughter also has this one.  This causes her occasional muscle weakness, pain, joint instability and hypermobility.  We had to take her out of school due to her excessive brain fog caused by the dysautonomia not to mention her other symptoms make school super difficult.  I just thank God that we have the resources to afford her health care, supplements, and her online school program!  We take it one step at a time. Of course we are also EXTREMELY THANKFUL that it isn't anything worse!

So I know this is an old post, but did you ever get any answers? Are you feeling better? It has started happening to me. Exactly what you described about yourself applies to me also. I felt like I was reading my own post - except I am not that fit anymore since even walking is difficult, and smoke as well. Hope you are feeling better sad it's so awful.

Wow this thread basically sums up my life!

I feel like no one really takes me seriously when I'm talking about it as there's such a long list of symptoms

and it could just be related to generalised anxiety and/or me searching for attention.

I've been suffering with these symptoms on/off for around 7-8 years now, with limited luck when visiting the GP.

I sometimes feel as if I have to exaggerate one symptom in particular to get the GP to focus on this so I can try to rule out any particular issues in that area.

    About me

    - 30 year old male

    - I work in IT and therefore spend a lot of time sat at a desk in front of a monitor

    - My posture is pretty poor

    - My teeth aren't amazing, I was advised to wear a brace as a child but never did.  I was

told at the time I do likely need to have my jaw broken/restructured to correct my overbite

if I was to get full benefit of the brace - and understandably (but regrettably) this scared me off!

    - I do apparently clench my teeth when concentrating or sometimes when i'm sleeping

    Symptoms

    - brain fog / fullness of the head / difficulty concentrating

    - anxiety

    - feeling dizzy (without a spinning sensation), or like I'm going to pass out

    - sinus pressure

    - detached from reality / body disassociation

    - heat rash all over body if I exercise (literally after like a 10 min walk)

      - I have to take antihistamines to control this

    - brief stabbing headaches (literally for seconds, usually on left side)

    - blocked nose (left side)

    - popping/clicking ear (left side)

    - raised gland in neck (left side)

    - numbness in cheek / nose (left side)

    - neck tension - have to click it for relief (again, mainly left side)

    - heartburn / chest pain (I have a hiatus hernia)

    - when I'm having a bad dizzy/foggy spell my blocked nose and ear popping is always as it's worst

    - if I take a deep breath through my nose my left ear blocks and I have to swallow to pop it

I used to find the symptoms would be fine in the morning, and gradually get worse throughout the day - almost

as if things were made worse by stress or tiredness.  More recently the symptoms have been with me pretty much constantly.

I was referred to an ENT specialist about 5 years ago and went through quite a long process, which resulted in me

having a septoplasty for a deviated septum.  Before I had this done I would regularly get bad sinusitis, which has significantly improved since the Op.  However, the other symptoms haven't.

I have largely learnt to live with the problem, except for when I have bad periods (like recently).

A few months ago I had a wisdom tooth infection - pericorinitis - I'm 30, and only have 1 fully through (top right).  The bottom two are making their way through but the top left is still in the gum.  I was given metronidazole, which gave me a horrible reaction and resulted in the worst anxiety I've ever had (numbness/pins and needles in limbs, loss of appetite, feeling I was going to die). 10 weeks on, the above has largely gone away, except occasional anxiety.  But I now feel I'm having a bad period with all of my other symptoms.

This has led me to wonder whether the trip to the dentist caused some jaw issues which has flaired things up (I had to open my jaw very wide for x-rays).  Or, maybe the reaction to the drug caused anxiety that has set off my other symptoms - I'm thinking about TMJ here.  If I clench or grind my teeth when anxious it could cause the other symptoms, creating a horrible cycle.

I've explained issues to several dentists and they all agree my symptoms aren't related to the fact my wisdom teeth haven't yet come through, but I'm not convinced.

Meanwhile, during this 10 week episode I had a blood test come up back positive for antibodies related to celiac's disease.  However, I had an endoscopy to prove this, which came back negative! The gastroenterologist thinks I have a gluten sensitivity and latent celiac's disease.  Apparently if I did have celiac's disease it could explain quite a few of the symptoms (allergies can really screw you up) and he estimated it could take 6 months to feel better.  I've been gluten free for 1 month now and my stomach issues have improved a fair bit but my head issues haven't.

I've obviously research this a lot over the years and the things that always come up are TMJ/Wisdom Teeth, Lyme's disease, Thyroid issues and Sinus issues.

I'm not convinced gluten intolerance or celiacs is the answer to all of this and feel it's more likely something sinus or TMJ related (jaw or wisdom teeth)

I feel as if my symptoms are made a lot worse by anxiety, and perhaps anxiety is the sole reason

for some of the symptoms.  But I'm absolutely convinced there's a root cause problem causing all of this beyond anxiety.

I have a feeling my symptoms could be a mix of TMJ and sinus problems (possibly related).  But because they cause such an array of issues getting a single diagnosis is so difficult.

Anyway, I don't have the answer yet.  But reading through this thread (and in fact writing this message) has inspired me to investigate further down the TMJ route.

(sorry for the poor structure of the message, there was a lot of detail to get through!)

I had an MRI of my TMJ area a few days ago. I'm waiting for the results.

How did you get to this stage? Did you just request it through your GP/dentist?
    • Posted

TMJ showed up in a previous MRI earlier this year.  I requested another MRI this week. I actually asked my doctor to focus it on the TMJ as every doctor thinks my issues are TMJ related but none of them actually did a specific MRI of the TMJ area. You have to push for read and push for tests because doctor's will just give up on you.
