Headaches after Exertion

Posted , 2 users are following.

HI, After i participate in sports like football or an activity that requires physical exertion I will start to get a headache. My head will feel tight, as if someone is squeezing it, and when i stand up i will feel very dizzy. This has got alot worse recently. I have had MRI and CT scans and all came back fine. I started taking Ibuprofen and a Glucose gel befor football. I started to notice a difference but unsure if its due to doing this or the fact i was paying football on a more regular basis. Since football finished for the season the headaches have got worse

    Hi Ben,

I have recently started suffering from this too!

I suffer with cluster headaches and hemeplegic migraine, but exercise induced headache is a relatively new thing for me.

I did some research and it says that exercising in hot humid weather can bring it on as can intense exercise too, I have been doing both but it doesnt normally cause a problem.

Like me, you have also had scans of the brain to show all is well so at least this bit is ok.

The research said that increasing salt can have an impact too on these headaches, I am not keen on having salt supplements to be honest as I take meds to keep my blood pressure down.

They do suggest different drugs to take for prevention, but I am waiting to hear from my neurologist this week before I take anything else, will keep you posted, in the meantime, please let me know if you have a breakthrough too.

    Good luck

      Hi,

      Thank you for the information,

I suffered from migraine from the age of 16 to about 19 and they stopped, Dr's put it down to a growth spurt, how accurate this is i have no idea. The all of a sudden the headaches started to come back but only after exercise or hard physical work.

I have received some tips and have started going for short runs and slowly building up intensity but. I have been advised that this will help in the longer term so fingers crossed.

    Hi Ben,

ok let me know how that goes please, as I sure dont want to give up exercise, although at times with the meds I take, I am really lethargic and dont have any energy,

I have to wait to hear from my neurologist and hope he can propose a way forward.

    Good luck
