Healing skin scraped off blood spots

Hello from the US. I think I get or GOT every side effect of pred. I have blood spots under skin. If skin gets rubbed off, it takes FOREVER to heal!  Right now, due to both PMR and recent diagnosis of TA, I am on 50 mg pred, and started on methotrexate last Sunday, along with folic acid. I also have had a canker sore under tongue....YIKES, HOW PAINFUL!  been over. Month trying to heal that with nystatin rinse... Any tips appreciated!

I used double base creme which I found helped the dry and easy damaged skin.  One good thing is it improves as the dose of preds decreases - I'm on 2.5 mg and it has improved over the past month.

Hello judy, no tips really other than keep all your body well moisturised. It will keep your skin nice and supple. If you graze your skin clean well then apply a antiseptic cream, savlon, germoline, etc, for at least 2 days to prevent any infection then continue again with the moisturising cream. It doesn't need to oil based so you feel really sticky but just a moisturiser like double base. All the best, tina

I suffered very badly with blood spots/tears when on 40 mg Pred.  Thankfully, as you reduce Pred, they gradually improve.  It takes a time - I was on 15mg before they really improved.  Still get them occasionally, but never as bad.

Just take care of your skin and use a good cream.

Judy, if Double Base Gel or Cream is available in the US, it is an excellent moisturiser to help combat the dry and thinning skin commonly caused by the steroids.  It will improve as your reduce the steroid dose.  Meanwhile, only use natural products in the shower.  In the very worst case, Double Base Gel can be applied all over your body and simply rinsed off in the shower - be sure to use a rubber mat though as it can be a little slippery.

With regard to the canker sore, you might find that a small increase in the amount of folic acid will help.  Also, if you don't already eat it, try adding some daily 'live' yoghurt to your diet, and avoid all toothpastes containing Triclosan.

I do both sympathise and empathise with your having a diagnosis of both PMR and TA - as if one isn't enough to cope with - but hang in there, it does get better.

I have purpura blood spots too, although they are improving a bit. Sometimes I look as if I lost in an encounter with a wild animal. I have to be very careful of the creams I use, ordinary moisturiser for me is a no no. I must admit when the spots break they can make one hell of a mess of the bed sheets. I reckon I have had fourteen side effects of pred I am aware of.

Thanks for all the replies, from my 'triends' that have been such informative AIDS. I have been using the Bag balm on arms, but I too, look like I was beat real good!  Don't even have to numb them, if I am working e.g. been cleaning cupboards, etc, the spots just appear!  I keep telling my self at least I HAVE ARMS!
