Health anxiety

Do any fellow sufferers recognise this.  You go to the doctors with some symptoms and of course you've been googling so you no exactly what's wrong with you.  You tell the doctor that your suffering from some incurable disease, it's always the worst case scenario.  They say your fine so you go out of the surgery feeling on top of the world.  Shortly afterwards doubts start to appear.  I forgot to mention something or I didn't explain it well enough so the whole thing starts over again.  Anyone out there experienced this.  Thanks for reading this post

Oh yes, recognise this very well - classic health anxiety. We want so much to be reassured. But no reassurance will ever be enough! Evil Dr google should never be consulted - yet we all do it! For eaxnole currently I have a frequent dry mouth and a bad taste sometimes. Now the sensible part of me knows that anxiety both dries ure mouth and can leave a bad taste, and my anx has been off the charts lately. But of course it has to be more than that and before u know it I'm constantly checking if my mouth is dry or I have a bad taste etc.... Then the visious cycle starts because of course if in checking for these things, then I'll feel them. Such is ocd and health anxiety - terrible!

I think the internet has made things a lot worse apparently it's called cyberchondria.

Yes it probably has, or at least its made it easier to wind ourselves up. I don't diagnose myself anymore. But I still always think I've got something terrible regardless of a self diagnosis

I think when we're more anxious the worse it is. I get a very white tongue too sometimes, but I think that's common too with anxiety

Has anyone had CBT to overcome health anxiety.   I found medication hasn't helped my HA.  Has anyone found meds that do help

Yes, Mary been there. And google can make it worse, but used right, Google can be helpful, but we need to look in a balanced way, not assume the worst case scenario is what we have, because usually its the least likely thing you have!  Some folk are more anxious about ill health, sickness, death than others, and ultimately I think thats the fear - death!  And we all need to come to terms with it, or use tools to help us be in the moment.  I have to work at it too. I dont want to waste my whole life worrying.  I might as well die now if I am going to do that. Nothing is certain, and you will miss a lot of enjoyment in life if you worry all the time.  I maybe sound very arrogant saying this and self assured, but I'm not I have to work at not being anxious too.  I use meditation, Very helpful) relaxation cds, exercise (cycling), playing keyboard, doing nice things for children friends etc, watch cheerful programmes. Try to find what works for you, x

Thanks for that.  I must admit I have felt better recently.  You are right we need to live our life to the full and stop worrying about the future.  Take care

I've been involved in a group organised by a professor who deals with HA.  We are trying to get doctors to be more aware of the issues involved with HA and try and get patients started with therapy ASAP.  I don't believe medication is always the answer but GP's just don't know how to deal with it

I think health anxiety is a modern thing. there's so much talk about health illness etc nowadays, and more access to information, and everyone is so aware of it all. Then there is the huge increase in certain diseases. When I was young ( I am 63) , we rarely gave any thought to illness, there was no google, no health programmes on telly. We ate without worrying, there wasn't all the talk about food and diet that we hear today. It can all be a bit much for people to cope with.

I agree.  The problem is that it is so easy to access medical information.  You have google, the media and other sources that just feed health anxiety.  Every newspaper has some health scare.  When we had swine flu it was on the news constantly.  Also when we go to the doctors we question more.  But a bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing.  I am the sane age as you and I also know how things have changed, not all for the better
