Hi my daughter is 20 years old and has been suffering with health anxiety for 6 months. She is due to start university in a week and I am at my wits end. I know if she could talk to a professional who could explain as to why her symptons are not a brain tumor etc. this would indeed help her.

Hey Kay,
Does your daughter's health anxiety is around Covid or anxiety itself? Can she seek a professional help from therapist at all? CBT may be helpful as it would give her tools to manage her health anxiety. I'm having horrible time with my health anxiety since Covid. I have been off sick from work in the last 5 months. Constantly scanning my body for aches and pains and any minor thing is Am I having a heart attack? Is it a brain aneurysm? Do I catch Covid? etc. I found mindfullness really helpful and setting aside a worry time (30 mins) each day to write down all my worries and thoughts etc.

It sounds very similar with me. I'm 30 year old, female. Does she do exercise to distract herself and go out 10 15 mins each day to get some light? They are quite helpful. I know how frustrating the situation is as you both feeling like she is back to where she was but I am confident that she came a long way. unfortunately getting better is going to take a time and effort. Try to take each day as it comes and always be there for her if she wants to speak

nothing seems to help at the minute i think if a professional was to tell her nothing is going to happen and explain why it would help

Maybe you can take her to the doctor's who would reassure her about her health.

A professional explaining to your daughter might only temporarily reassure her. people with health anxiety constantly seek/need reassurance. Once they overcome one set of symptoms it's always replaced by more. Psychiatrists and Therapists can help but.... it's far more important to teach her coping and management strategies in the long-term. I have had health anxiety for 5 years and unfortunately it does not go away by reassurance alone. It's not an easy fix and you have to really work at everything from CBT therapy, mindfulness, meditation, exercise, getting good quality sleep ect.

I have the same anxiety about Covid . Im all day searching on my mobile 'when will the pandemic be over'. ..... Im constantly hoping that there will be 'good news about the pandemic'. but there never is good news.. after reading all the bad news every day. My stomach is also in a bad state... Im unable to eat anything... did you ever notice that you are unable to eat ? and this increases your anxiety even more ?
