hi everyone! I am hoping to get some sort of relief from someone elses opinion. i suffer horribly from health anxiety. recently tge past few days ive been having muscle twitching above my knee and in my thigh ive basically convinced myself i have ALS and am going to die. i now have random twitching in my arms etc as well and idk if its something bad like i said or my anxiety is now somehow causing muscle twitching. 😦 im exhausted.

I am sorry this is scaring you. But I want to let you know that muscle twitching is extremely common with health anxiety. I have had it on and off for over 30 years and I’m still here! I just ignore them now because I know they are harmless. They are called benign fasciculation’s which means they are muscle twitches that are not harmful.

Many athletes get these all the time with the way they use their muscles. Muscle twitching is not an initial symptom of ALS. my neurologist told me that with that disease you don’t feel any sensory symptoms such as muscle twitching, numbness tingling etc. he said when we have anxiety, our muscles tend to tighten up even if we are not aware. That tightening up often causes muscle twitches.

the more you relax your mind the less you will have the twitches. The more you worry and overthink this the more you will have them. That’s just the way this thing goes. So work on decreasing your anxiety. You can speak with a counselor about what may be causing your anxiety. speaking with someone helps a lot, take a relaxing warm bath and do some long slow deep breathing.

get some exercise and stay busy. when you get a muscle twitch just acknowledge it in a calm way. ❤

thank you for responding to me, i honestly appreciate it so much. I am on week two of starting prozac for my anxiety and my doctor said the muscle twotches can be a side effect from that as well. my kind is a mess always, your response was comforting for me in this time though!
