Health anxiety - bloated/ovarian cancer

Hi all

I suffer really bad with health anxiety and I just convinced something is wrong. All heart/stroke problems have been ruled out so now I am obsessing over ovarian cancer. I have been bloated for 2-3 weeks now (also had my menstrual cycle) but it has just felt different to normal. I had an  ultrasound 2 weeks back and the Dr said everything looked fine. I went back again today and she said it is highly unlikely it is anything serious but because of your anxiety and for peace of mind I will refer you for an internal scan.

I am so nervous and adamant its ovarian cancer. Does anyone else get bloating with anxiety please??

Hi Hannah, yes I do! I get all sorts of strange symptoms when panicky or anxious. The list is endless! You mention that you suffer from anxiety. When you are feeling anxious, all your interest bodily functions speed up, hence the saying ": s**t myself."! Sorry, to sound crass but do you know what I mean? Rather than being something seriously wrong, I honestly think your symptoms are anxiety related. Speaking from personal experience, anxiety does play havoc with you, stomach, digestive system and bowel. That's what I think is happening for you. Also, you are fretting about things which probably makes the symptoms. If we could all just stop, worrying, fretting etc. Then we would! No one chooses to feel like this, it's depressing and draining. Hope this helps. Please keep in touch, Donna x

      Hi Donna

Thank you for your reply, it means a lot.

I just cannot help obsessing over having ovarian cancer cause I have every single symptom. I do suffer with severe health anxiety and I am having therapy for it, but it doesn't stop me thinking the worst. I am just trying to tell myself the Dr would have picked something serious up on the ultrasound I previously had. I have an internal scan soon and I just know I will feel like I am dying until then sad x

Hi Hannah, thanks for your reply. I can sense this whole thing is really stressing you out. I think you could also tell yourself that this is a scary time for you, so it's OK to feel scared or nervous, you're bound to - anyone would be. But I still believe it will be fine and at least it will put your mind at rest, when you know for certain. Do you think Hannah, that your health anxiety has exaggerated how scared you feel? Please don't think I'm trivialising your feelings. I think you're absolutely doing the right thing by reminding yourself of the truth. They would have picked up on it if it was really serious. They can see everything on ultra scans. Also, I wouldn't look up your symptoms on the net because it's enough to make anyone paranoid! And it is making you feel worse. When you find yourself obsessing, distract yourself. You are stronger than you think Hannah. It's mind over matter. Easier said than done, I know. I'm here for you anytime x

    Hey Hannah

I hope your feeling better , I really felt like I had to reply to this because iv’e just got over this scare myself . I’m 22 and ever since I lost my best friend my health anxiety has flared up really bad . Since november ive had so many health issues my recent one too being ovarian/stomache cancer. I to had on and off pain in my ovaries , hip pain , weeing more , gas , bloating . As you can see I’ve had pretty much all the symptoms . I also wanted to go get a scan but I know with my doctor it would of properly taken ages and after paying privately for a mole removal also due to bad health anxiety I couldn’t afford to go and have private scans. However since accepting that it would have to wait most of my symptoms have now disappeared and I’m feeling so much better. My anxiety is still pretty crap I’ve realised that when your in a state of anxiety for a long time even when you start to feel better you can still have lingering symptoms which of course triggers our anxiety all over again. It’s good your getting your tests done for peace of mind as that is everything but try to relax and distract yourself with other things you might just find that your symptoms clear up  x

Me too! I've been getting extreme health anxiety and I was so scared of getting colon cancer. According to EVERYONE, colon cancer is very unlikely for my age, I'm 13 btw. I don't think I have colon cancer in my family. But there are a lot of GI disorders in my family. Right now, I'm settling on IBS because 1)I met all of the Rome criteria thing 2) I don't have alarming symptoms that I know off 3)I'm young. Also, I have bad bad bad anxiety and stress. Currently, Im trying to ease my mind to see if it would help my digestive system a bit. Might be working. So maybe, you should think of the less serious conditions like maybe you are experiencin these things because of technology stress/anxiety. If a doctor says it's very unlikely, it's very unlikely then. Try to find a different answer that's not cancer or "I'm gonna die". It's easy to say. But I'm putting myself into the more relaxed state of mind and honestly, it's only been a few days and I already feel my energy boosting. Sorry for the long story
