I had it and it was painful afterwards, which I wasn't expecting as it is supposed to be pretty much pain free for most people

would you recommend this surgery, What did you do for the pain , and has this surgery worked for you, I have to make a decision as booked in for the surgery but am quite unsure about the pain and recovery

Hi Dan, had a traditional open surgery 2 weeks ago and been reading about hemorrhoid surgeries of all kind before and after and just some advise to make you prepared, don't believe what the healthcare/doctors/NHS etc. says(that you'll be climbing Mount Everest one week after) and be prepared for the worst, then you'll have no surprises basically. I would recommend at least 2-3 weeks off work to begin with, have a food supply of 1-2 weeks at home, take stool softeners and keep you diet to almost only liquids the first week at least. Juices, protein powder(if you are into that and maybe an Isolate with no lactose, digests better), liquid or almost liquid soups(spinach is good, easy to digest and works good for soft stools) and soft fruits and veggies(Pear, Apple, Pineapple, mashed green peas etc). And if the recovery goes well after surgery then really good, but it seems that it is pretty rare to walk away scot free from hem.surgeries so I would be prepared. Good luck!

Hi Dan,
I had the HALO procedure on 1 grade 3 Internal hem in jan 19. I had banding on 3 others at the same time. Overall it wasn't too painful. Don't get me wrong it's not pleasant but manageable. Took maybe 4 weeks to get back to normal. Just make sure BMs are soft if possible. I drank huel and ate soup plus stool softener and that worked well.
The procedure had worked on the hem that prolapsed frequently and it stopped prolapsing and the ones that got banded seemed to behave too. Basically they would all come out to say hello during a BM and go away of their own accord. I told myself I could live with it.
That was until i had my annual review with the surgeon in jan 20. He said things were much improved but he could band the 2 that were remaining as they were only grade 2. Seems the prolapsing one that had HALO had gone!
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago and hello, my old nemesis returns and is as bothersome as it ever was. Itching and prolapsing. Having been discharged, I am now having to start all over. Gutted is an understatement especially as I eat a strictly healthy diet, drink water all day, get plenty fibre too. I walk every day and do yoga . I used to run 5 days a week but no longer do that out of fear of making it worse! FYI I'm 32 and male.
So, in summary HALO did work temporarily for me but may be different for others.
I am now actually considering electro therapy or full haemorrhoidectomy privately but costs are eye watering!
Good luck!

from my research and discussions with my surgeon the traditional hemmorhoidectomy is still considered the most effective way for lasting results. although other methods claim to be less painful .. based on patients reviews here it doesnt seem to be always the case leaving them to undergo multiple treatments. Personally, i opted for the traditional op (although terrified of the pain). i have no regrets and the recovery wasnt as bad as i imagined. Best of luck 😃

ive had the HALO done twice. it is pretty darn sore after and recovery is a good 4 weeks. im not convinced it lasts long term though, it does help but ive still got trouble even though i eat well, drink lots of water and take movicol daily. id get it done but bear in mind it might not fully fix it in years to come
